Zanzibar Beaches
Zanzibar; the name alone echoes with the charisma and historic charm of this archipelago of spice islands in the Indian Ocean. This is an Indian Ocean beach location with plenty to discover. The history of ancient Monsoon trade, of gold and indigo, of incumbent Sultans and passionate princesses helplessly seeps into your beach experience here.
The joy of Zanzibar is the Swahili experience, lapping subtly at the sides. The culture and history of the place is all around you, but all you need do is to lie back and lap it up. There are some stunning, white sand beaches, and a wonderful arabic-swahili style infusing your experience. Great diving, delicious indian ocean fare and some good less-expensive beach locations that really do fulfil laidback beach dreams.
With miles of palm-fringed shores, powder soft coral sands and gin-clear seas, Zanzibar lives up to the Indian Ocean island idyll. The atmosphere is compounded by a colourful Swahili culture where traditional wooden dhows sail beneath billowing lanteen sails on each far horizon. A great location for exploring, diving and snorkelling and with a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets
There are several small islands off the coast of Zanzibar, which offer an even more exclusive experience than the main island. Some of these islands can be stayed on and others are visited only as a day trip from Zanzibar. Zanzibar's most famous island is Mnemba which is simply mind-blowing
The northernmost point of Zanzibar, 'Nungwi', is possibly the most beautiful sandy spot, not including the stunning sandy coral atoll of Mnemba, on the north east shoulder. The east coast has good, long swathes of white sandy beaches, with a long shallow tidal shelf; each area has a good range of accommodation for various budgets. Lesser visited, secluded areas in the south are proving increasingly worthwhile.
Best Zanzibar BeachesMnemba is located just off the North East Coast of Zanzibar and is a tiny dream island with the impressive accolade of being one of the most romantic and exclusive coral atoll islands in the world.
One of our favourite hotels on Zanzibar and one of the best along the East African coast. The beach here is the best on Zanzibar and unlike much of the east coast, is free of hawkers and general hustlers. Nungwi village just down the coast is a great place to go out and have a few drinks or a bite of lunch.
Set over on the north eastern coastline of Zanzibar, Pongwe Beach Hotel is a small hotel that consists of 18 rooms set in small cottages, 2 rooms to each cottage (so clients are sharing a wall). Most rooms have views of the beach and sea beyond.
