The Residence Zanzibar, Ted’s latest trip report

My final two nights have been at the brand new luxury resort ‘ The Residence Zanzibar’. This Hotel has sister properties in both Mauritius and Tunisia and carries a strong brand name. It opened in April but will not officially open until later on in this summer, but over the last two days I have been very impressed. It was a long journey from the Manta Resort on Pemba but once I arrived I had a swim and a few cocktails and a great seafood meal of freshly caught Red Snapper.

Almost 70 Luxury rooms which are pristine and each has their own private swimming pool which you can actually swim in as opposed to the smaller plunge pools elsewhere. The property is spread out over a large area on the South West of the island and to get around you simply dial 0 on your suite phone and a golf cart and butler come and pick you up. The food, cocktails, service are fantastic and most of bar and restaurant managers come from Mauritius or Tunisia giving a slightly different edge over other properties on the island.

This hotel is all about luxury and great service and in a few months time when all the freshly planted palm trees and landscaping have developed I imagine it will be a great resort.

Probably not the best beach on the island but this doesn’t matter as you have lots of pools to swim in, an incredible spa, very luxurious rooms and great service.

A great new addition to the other luxury resorts on Zanzibar.

Fundu Lagoon, The Manta – Ted’s latest trip report

Fundu lagoon is located at the south of the island where as the manta is on the very north tip so it gave me a great chance to see Pemba island. Compared to Zanzibar, Pemba only sees a very small fraction of the number of tourists. This is a real tropical island with hilly areas, a tropical forest and untouched natural coastline. A lot of the coast line is made up of mangrove but there are a few pristine white beaches and manta has one of these. The drive from chake chake is 1 hour on tar road and then last 30 minutes is on sandy tracks through local villages.

The manta (formerly Manta Reef) has been here for a long time but changed hands in 2008, originally it was a very basic dive hang out with basic facilities but now it is more established as a mid budget beach resort for people who really want to get away and really enjoy diving and snorkelling.

The rooms are clean and comfortable as opposed to overtly luxurious and the general vibe is very relaxed, the all inclusive basis also includes one massage per day.

In terms of diving and snorkelling the beach has a few spots on the house reef in front of the resort and there are plenty of other dive spots you can go out with the manta dive boat.

There are currently some good deals on offer which makes manta a good value beach get away on Pemba.

I am off for a massage now and then I am kayaking to the reef for a snorkel before heading off to fly down to Zanzibar for my last two nights at the residence

Sand Rivers, Impala, Amara, and Fundu – Ted’s latest trip report

I have just landed into chake chake the capital of Pemba island after 4 nights in the Selous game reserve.

After Beho Beho I visited Impala camp which is a permanent tented camp right on the Rufiji river. The tented en suite rooms are set up on stilts with large verandas looking out onto the water where there is plenty of hippos and elephants. I was impressed by the guiding here and the level of service, it is very different to it’s very affordable sister camp Lake Manze but I would probably still consider Selous safari camp which is only $40 more expensive…

The next morning I took a boat from Impala Camp up the Rufiji deeper into Selous to Sand Rivers, the trip was a great way to see the Selous and was only just possible as the water level in june starts to drop more and more so as the dry season goes on. However the water levels at the actual camps are perfect for boating all yearn around. We saw hundreds of hippo and this stretch of river is great for birding.

Sand Rivers is one of the oldest camps in Selous they certainly know how to run an excellent wilderness experience with great comfort, high quality guiding and probably one of the best boating safari spot in the Selous. I spent my first afternoon on a game drive exploring the area which has a mixture of hills, swamps, river, lakes, forested areas and also some open spots which gives a very varied game experience.

I spent the morning on the river up at Steiglers gorge fishing, I caught a couple of cat fish and had one tiger who really fought hard and in the end snapped my line! After lunch i headed out on foot with Mark who is the camp manager and selous walking expert and one of the nomad scouts for a 4 hour walking safari where they had set up an excellent fly camp. The fly camp tents at sand rivers are just simple mosquito nets which means you can watch the star filled night sky as you drift off to sleep. The next morning we walked around lake and up some very steep hippo tracks onto a ridge which gave us great view of the surroundings tracking some very fresh lion tracks which we stumbled upon later on in the vehicle. A mother and a few young White faced whistling ducks strolled passed and the lioness could not resist a quick easy snack!

I then spent a night at a new property, Amara Selous which is in a different area in the hills in Selous. This new camp is still establishing itself and differentiates itself by one of the few camps to have air conditioning, the rooms are very comfortable, the guides are new to the area but seem to be very promising. They offer boating safari but the river level is too low as they are located on the Ruaha and not the rufiji like the majority of the other camps so this is a slight draw back. Full report to follow…

After safari there is nothing better to just chill out and relax on the beach and fundu lagoon on Pemba island is a great option for those who want some where remote, very chilled out and fancy some snorkelling and diving. I am staying in a superior suite which is very private with views out on the bay, lots of shade from the trees where bush baby and ore primates swing in the trees.

Each night we eat in a different spot, by the infinity pool, on the beach or in the main area and there are a choice of 3 bars to enjoy the sunset or why not just order food to your room and sit by your private plunge pool.

This afternoon I am heading off to manta reef which is another hotel in this very remote and quiet island… And then my last two nights are at the residence on Zanzibar before flying back to London on British airways…

More to come !

Ted Archdale: An amazing day in Beho Beho

What a delight – I haven’t been to Beho Beho for a year and if anything the lodge is even better than I last remember it. As i am typing this as a huge herd of ele’s are wandering by about 100 foot away.

This morning we were lucky enough to come across a wild dog hunt, and when we eventually caught up with them they had brought down an impala – amazing scenes !

Of all the lodges in the Selous, surely Beho Beho has the best rooms and the best views of anywhere in the Selous. Have a look at the view below from my room

Next stop Impala and Sand Rivers, if they have internet connections i will post otherwise i will post again once i hit Zanzibar and Pemba

Ted Archdale: Fam Trip Selous, Pemba and Zanzibar

I am off to Tanzania tonight to check out a few properties in the Selous Game Reserve, on Pemba Island and on Zanzibar.

In the Selous I am visiting Impala Camp who is owned by Adventure Camps in the Siwandu Area, I am then off to Sand Rivers owned by Nomad to experience a Fly Camp and a few walking safaris and finally off to Amara Selous a relatively new lodge on the Great Ruaha River which we know very little about.

On the beach I will be staying a few nights at Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island as well as spending a night at Manta Reef before flying down to Zanzibar to The Residence which is a brand new hotel in the Kizimkazi area in the South West of Zanzibar. This Hotel has a strong name in Mauritius and is causing a slight stir on Zanzibar so we are interested to find out more….
