Okavango Delta - Wet Camps

The Okavango Delta's wet camps are those where the main activity throughout the year is based on water. Whereas many of the Delta's camps only offer boating when the Okavango is in full flood, the wet camps offer boating safaris at any time of the year, even when the floods have fully receded. The main reason for this is their proximity to the Delta's main channels. Although there are a number of wet camps that don’t offer any game driving during the high season flood months.

These wet camps tend to be in some of the Okavango's most beautiful areas, however, people have to be aware that as a general rule wet camps have poor game in comparison to the mixed and particularly the dry camps. The reason is quite simple in that the majority of Africa's big game and particularly the predators are not comfortable in water. The lack of big game is made up for by the beauty of each area and the particularly good bird life; but we would certainly recommend combining the wet camps with others that offer better game!

Wilderness Safaris' Jacana Camp is a beautiful camp that sits on its own private island in the middle of the Okavango. The camp is surrounded on all sides by water and is quite simply stunning. Xigera, albeit actually located in the Moremi Game Reserve, is another great wet camp run by Wilderness Safaris. Little Vumbura in the Vumbura concession is surrounded by water during high flood and so for these months can be viewed as a wet camp but on the whole offers surprisingly good game throughout the year.
&Beyond's Xudum and Xaranna Camps are in an area of the Okavango that gets very wet during the high season months and as a result they have to be viewed as mixed but also as wet camps. They are certainly not the best camps for big game viewing when the floods are in.
Recommended lodges in this area:

Okavango Delta
Jacana is a lovely small camp, set well off the beaten track and prides itself on its magical water based experiences. Being inaccessible by vehicle and only by boat you get a real sense of privacy and exclusivity.
Okavango Delta
This camp is all about an area of stunning beauty and nature at its most delicate. When the flood water come down from Angola, the Kalahari changes from an arid desert into a lush lilly covered wetland filled with life.

Little Vumbura is gorgeous little camp set on an island and well off the beaten track. This classic Wilderness Safaris camp is a favourite of ours and we have a big soft spot for using it over its big sister, Vumbura Plains. Little Vumbura only has 6 rooms whereas Vumbura Plains is made up of two, nine room camps.
