Indian Ocean Mainland
We much prefer the beaches and islands of Tanzania and Zanzibar over those in Kenya, since most of the Kenyan Coastline has been overrun with hordes of cheap British and Italian tourists. However, for all the very many large hotels on this coastline there are one or two hidden-away gems. We do not sell any hotels in Mombassa or Malindi for similar reasons.
The Kenyan coastline stretches for about 300 miles from Lamu in the far north near the Somali border, down to the beaches south of Mombasa. Lamu and its beaches we discuss separately - this section deals with the stretch from Malindi down to south of Mombasa.
This stretch, though very busy and often abused by large hotels, is very picturesque; the white sand, palm-fringed beaches that one expects from the Indian Ocean. Coral is abundant, making for great diving and snorkeling. It is worth noting that the beaches are very tidal, so swimming can be impossible at low tide and seaweed can be a real problem in our summer months. Most of the smaller hotels are situated south of Mombasa – from Diani beach and down, or around Watamu. Kenyas Indian Ocean Mainland: Accommodation Choices
Hemmingways, though a big hotel, is a great choice in the far quieter area of Watamu (just south of Malindi). For those looking at accommodation around Mombassa then the beaches south of Mombasa are the best choice, Alfajiri is the most luxurious property, followed by the houses of Msambweni and Kinondo Kwetu. Diani house is the cheapest of these options south of Mombassa, but still a lovely place.

Each of these vast, luxury villas exudes an air of calm and class. The Alfajiri Villas are located a stones throw away from what must be one of the best beaches in Africa and, with very high standards of service and cuisine, this definitely ranks in the top 5 beach destinations in Kenya. We are big fans of all of the villas and, with them being bookable in total or partially, they make a suitable getaway for families and couples alike.

Msambweni House is a relatively new addition to the Kenya coast and is definitely a welcome one! The house itself has a great feel to it with all of the rooms having an open and fresh feel to them. The stretch of beach that they are located on is far enough away from the infamous Diani that it is not impacted by the large numbers of lodges up there and so makes for a great and enjoyable beach stay.

This hotel is a very good choice for those with a family or couples who like to be active while on holiday. Being relatively small compared to the goliaths around Mombasa, this hotel has really cornered the resort style hotel market and is also a must visit spot for the big game fishermen between August and April. All in all, it may not be quite suited to the quieter tastes of honeymooners, but the food and the surroundings certainly make it stand out.
