KIZINGONI VILLAS

Lamu Beaches

Kizingoni Villas: Our View

The houses are a relatively new addition to the Lamu coastline but offer a great alternative to private houses of Lamu and Shela. Each of the houses has been built to a very high standard and, with the luxury of having staff to pick up groceries from Lamu and, if you are not in the mood for cooking, to cook, a stay in one of the houses is fantastic. The only drawback that we can mention is that the plot they have, while benefitting from being around the point, is not in as good a location as the nearby Kizingo.

We find Kizingoni Villas works out good value for a family or a large group of friends, we give it 3 palms

Kizingoni Villas: The Detail

Kizingoni Beach stretches across 24 acres of beach-front between Kizingo Lodge and Kipungani Sea Breezes. There are not many stretches of beach like this left in the world. It offers seclusion, cooling winds, fresh water and clean seas, yet the delights and supplies of Lamu and Shela are a 20 minute boat ride away. The local village of Kipungani is completely unspoilt. From there the villas receive palm products, staff, fish, dhows and donkeys, in turn providing employment and funding for community initiatives. Local events such as weddings and festivals are celebrated together.

Each of the 5 villas (and there are plans for a further 5 in the future) has been built with an eye on giving each and open and airy feel, allowing the cooling breezes of the Indian Ocean flow through each. All of the current villas allow for complete seclusion and the feeling that this beautiful beach is yours alone.

With activities such as visits to the nearby Lamu Village, snorkeling, water skiing and swimming, the hands off feeling of the houses allows you to do as much or as little as you like.

Lamu
All of the houses are well placed within the village, but we would probably err towards the beach house as it is right on the beach and features a pool and is the last bit of civilisation for the next 14 miles! They are all, however, perfect for a week as a beach and town stay…but don’t forget to bring your own alcohol if you like an evening sundowner as the village (with the exception of the nearby Peponi) is dry!
Lamu Beaches
The small and secluded Kipungani Explorer is a lodge that has started to go from strength to strength in the last few years. Once a well known lodge, it slipped off the radar for a few years, but is now back to its best. Well placed along Kipungani Bay, the rooms can become a little hot when the wind is not blowing, but this is a rare event. Otherwise, the lodge is a very good choice for those looking to relax in simple yet charming rooms.
Lamu
This has rightly been the place to stay in Lamu for the last decade as it continues to provide great levels of service in beautiful surroundings. The town of Shela is less touristy and crowded than the main town of Lamu and is great to have a wander around of an afternoon.
