Lamu Beaches
Bizarrely the first thing we have to say is that the quality of Lamu's beaches do not live up to the quality most people expect from an Indian Ocean beach! This really is not the Maldives, Seychelles, Zanzibar or Mauritius, the beaches here are simply not that great. With that out the way, there are certainly miles and miles of beach on Lamu itself, and a scattering of fairly good beach lodges. But get off Lamu and there are some great options.
At low tide Lamu's beaches reveal miles of un-kept seaweed rich beach that is simply not attractive to the eye! So many brochures write about miles and miles of stunning beaches, effectively painting a picture of some of the worlds best.
We take a different approach and try to paint a picture of what the islands beaches are really like because in all honesty, if you come expecting 'brochure beaches', you will simply be disappointed! Off Lamu islands coast however lie a number of small islands that are home to great little beach lodges. It is these we encourage clients to visit. However it is worth considering the fact that for the vast majority, Tanzania has the best of Africa's beaches - we recommend you consider flying here! Lamu Beaches: Accommodation choices
Peponi's is arguably the best accommodation on Lamu and in our view is one of the first places clients should cosnider. Although it lack a beauftul beach there is an undeniable atmopshere and character that has made the hotel very famous over the years. Some say it has lost its original character but the hotel still offers good accommodation and reliably good service. Kizingoni is a rustic little beach lodge made of reed and thatch that sits on Lamu's best beach and has a wide choice of complimentary activities. Manda Bay's location close to Lamu and Shela town means it is a popular choice that is backed up by stylish managment and funky lodge design. Off the coast however lies Kiwayu, our favorite lodge in the area.
Recommended lodges in this area:
Lamu
This has rightly been the place to stay in Lamu for the last decade as it continues to provide great levels of service in beautiful surroundings. The town of Shela is less touristy and crowded than the main town of Lamu and is great to have a wander around of an afternoon.
Lamu Beaches
With its conservation credentials such as using solar paneling to heat water, the lodge ticks quite a few boxes in our view. Mary Jo and Louis are charming hosts and regale many an interesting tale about their years spent in Africa and the areas they have seen. With rooms larger than plenty of London flats, the feel inside is of an airy and calm space and are perfect to relax and forget about the rest of the world.
Lamu Beaches
The houses are a relatively new addition to the Lamu coastline but offer a great alternative to private houses of Lamu and Shela.
