Rift Valley Lakes

The East Africa, Rift runs through the whole Eastern side of the African continent including some of the oldest, largest and deepest lakes in the world. Kenya is home to eight of the Rift Valle Lakes found in Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Lake Turkana in the far North of the country on the border with Ethiopia (made famous by the film The Constant Gardener), is Kenya’s largest lake yet very few people travel this far North due to how incredibly remote this destination is. There is only one lodge in the area, a fantastic property called Desert Rose which we use very occasionally, simply due to low demand. Lake Logipi, Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Lake Elementeita and Lake Magadi are all Rift Valley lakes but few people travel to these due to either their remote locations or lack of good quality accommodations. Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha however are frequently visited by travellers, especially Nakuru due to its famous flamingo populations. To read more about these two lakes please follow the tool bar.

Lake Naivasha is one of only two fresh water lakes in the Great Rift Valley. The fresh water attracts some of Africa’s big game, including giraffe, buffalo and hippo but there are no predators here and Naivasha is certainly not a big game destination park!
Named by the explorer John Speke, after the Queen at the time, Lake Victoria is the world’s second largest freshwater lake. This huge lake has shores into Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
