MARLIN

Bazaruto Archipelago

Marlin: Our View

Vast palm trees set in indigenous gardens surround the whole lodge; the sea views are spectacular. The water temperature ranges between 23C and 26C making scuba diving and snorkelling a day long activity if so desired. Combine this with a private picnic lunch on one of the beaches and quite frankly you just do not want to leave this lodge. Other activities include ocean-ski paddling, windsurfing, Hobie Cat sailing, island drives and island hopping. It's a lovely lodge but it is ferociously expensive for what it offers, like all southern Mozambican lodges.

Although the lodge is excellent and the beaches are soft and powdery, it does not really make up for the crowds of people that gather around here now. Like all lodges in this area, it is overpriced so only gets 3 palms.

Marlin: The Detail

It is situated in Bazaruto on the southwest shore of Benguerra Island, an area whose beach was seemingly made for postcards; one of the finest beaches in the world. Whilst also offering some of the finest scuba diving sites and some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world, Marlin is without doubt one of the best lodges in the area; the beach really is fantastic and accommodation a real height in unpretentious luxury.

Compromising 21 chalets, built on stilts with wooden decks, reed walls and thatched roofs, the lodges themselves are decorated with deep coloured woods and cream linens and are connected to the main areas by elevated walkways from the rear of each chalet. All are en-suite with their own private veranda and a walkway leading down to the powder soft beach in front (which each lodge has its own private part of).

A swimming pool and attractive recreational areas (along with those few miles of staggering beaches that we may have mentioned) offer guests the choice of being as involved in activities as they want or being as secluded and private as they want. Experienced chefs prepare dinners, consisting of a wide array of seafood specialties. Dinners are either served in the main dining area or on the beach in front of the lodge where a wonderful selection of seafood is prepared over the open fires on the beach.

The key for us at Bazaruto is to use it as a base to explore the surrounding beaches and reefs; it is not somewhere to spend days at the lodge itself.
