Cultural Tourism Namibia

The stunning landscapes of Nambia are harsh and beautiful, and the people who live here in a traditional style are equally impressive in their own right. The semi-nomadic Himba people of Northern Namibia have maintained their culture and traditions, mainly as a result of their extreme isolation these arid landscapes.
The nomadic, goat herding Himba have traditionally lived hundreds of miles distant in the far north of the country,  close to the Angola border, although they have come south as lands and times have changed. Today, wildlife conservation is inextricably linked with the people who share the land, especially in the the community conservancies where ecotourism has become the most important revenue. Now many of the 12,000 strong Himba people live within community conservancies, in which the delicate balance between wildlife and lifestyle may be preserved.

Shuman's Skeleton Coast and Kunene River Camps and Wilderness Safaris' Serra Cafema and Skeleton Coast camps are all situated within Himba territory, and each of these operators has developed mutually respectful, positive relationship with local villages. This enables clients to experience life within the local community in a sensitive and mutually beneficial experience.

Other, lower cost, mobile operators visit the Himba independently. But this entails at least a few days of mobile travel in order to reach them.

The Skeleton Coast is quite simply one of the most breathtaking and unique places on earth. The Atlantic Ocean crashes onto a shoreline where seals congregate in colonies of thousands, against a backdrop of sand dunes taller than skyscrapers. This area is dramatic, wild and unbelievably beautiful. It is like nowhere else in Africa. The Skeleton Coast is a must for any Namibia based itinerary.
