Diving

Diving the Indian Ocean around east Africa's coast and islands is world renowned. The thriving coral reefs and atolls here provide rewarding diving opportunities for all levels and abilities, exploring deep drops and shallower, soft corals.

East Africa has great marine diversity, especially from Tanzania south, with healthy reefs, good visibility, and many exciting dive sites. With an average visibility between 20 and 60m (usually seasonal), the water is warm and there is plenty of colourful shallow action for complete beginners to enjoy. There are plenty of diverse, small reef fish in the shallows, with various sharks, rays and enormous fish at deeper drop-offs at deeper locations.

Certainly some of the finest diving in the Indian Ocean. Mozambique is the place to come if you are dreaming of truly stunning, unspoilt coral reefs. And you could have them to yourself.

Around Tanzania's islands the Indian Ocean is sparkling, clear and thriving with marine life and interest. Diverse underwater landscapes, with the fantastically deep Pemba channel, colourful coral atolls and a multitude of marine life.

The Seychelles are a sparkling marine playground, with masses of corals and fish to delight novices and experienced divers. The best diving is from the exclusive, expensive, private islands that enjoy unparalelled remoteness and pristine reefs.

If diving is your driving force for selecting your Indian Ocean beach location, we would point you to Mozambique... to the Quirimbas for the ultimate, secluded experience. Then, in order of preference, look to Mafia Marine Park in Tanzania, or options in the Pemba channel. There is good diving over the colourful coral gardens around Zanzibar, and some options from Kenya.

Complete beginners wishing to learn to dive may wish to book a PADI diving course before they go. A full PADI course will usually take around 5 days to complete; although many dive schools can arrange for you to do an introductory dive . Dive packages and night dive options are available.
