Diving In Tanzania

Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba islands have a great range of dive sites, from colourful coral atolls to oceanic drops. Pemba has spectacular wall diving, clear water and big fish, making it one of East Africa's premier diving locations. There is also a great range of marine life here, with turtles, dolphins, and hundreds of types of fish amid incredibly varied coral formations.
The best diving in Tanzania is from the offshore islands, rather than any mainland locations. In essence, the diving around Zanzibar is varied, colourful coral gardens, with particularly good options around Mnemba atoll. The diving here is great for all abilities and interests, with very deep adventures in the Pemba Channel, frequented by large pelagics. Keen divers are also well advised to consider exploring the underwater spectacles of Mafia Marine Park, with some memorable drift dives.

The Mafia archipelago is a group of five remote sleepy islands 45 minutes flight south of Zanzibar. Wild, quiet and unkept, the islands offer an alternative for those trying to escape the huslte and bustle of Zanzibar. Regarded by many as a reflection of what Zanzibar was like years ago, Mafia is a fantastic option for those wanting something a little different.

Zanzibaris a heavenly Indian Ocean archipelago, studded with palm trees and fringed with deep coral sands. This rural Swahili island is historic and culturally fascinating, and its striking ocean views are gloriously beautiful.  There are some wonderful small hotels on magnificent beaches, providing as much or as little as you want to do, and the combination of its beaches with time exploring the historic Stone Town is a winner
Pemba is a beautifully quiet island that lies about 25 minutes flight North of Zanzibar. With a fraction of the visitors that visit Zanzibar visiting Pemba, the island has very few hotels yet retains a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The ocean here provides for some of Tanzania’s best dive sites and subsequently Pemba is a Mecca for serious divers and for people wanting to escape the hussle and bustle of Zanzibar.

Great diving schools in Zanzibar make the best choice for novices and first-timers, or those who would like to stay and do a PADI course. These are all available in Pemba and Mafia as well, which are both good options for experienced divers seeking new adventures.
