Namibia Safari
Namibia is not a natural 'safari' destination, rather more a spectacular landscape experience, with potential to witness wildlife adapted to the extraordinary environment here. Glorious flying experiences up the Skeleton Coast, with unparalelled cultural safari experiences in the northernmost Kunene River area; although expensive and logistically tricky.
Namibia has a landscape and wildlife unlike any other; but it is a bore to get to from the UK. Namibian safaris include a great
spectrum of wildlife in Etosha National Park, although this safari experience is extremely busy and slightly odd, with the benefit of active, floodlit waterholes visible from the large internal camps at night. Beyond Etosha, the highlight of wildlife safaris here are desert species of elephant and rhino, with excellent rhino trekking in Damaraland. Damaraland is an absolutely stunning area an hours flight North of Swakopmund. The scenery is mindblowing, but it is still the spectacular game that many people regard as the real prize. Damaraland is home to desert elephant, desert rhino, sand dwelling lions and a wealth of other unique species which have adapted to live in this dry inhospitable environment. The area is also home to Twyfelfontein rock art, an amazing collection drawn by the San bushmen over 4,000 years ago.
Etosha is one of Africa's most famous parks and remains Namibia's most popular wildlife destination. The Etosha pan and its surrounding waterholes attract huge concentrations of animals including rhino, lion, elephant, many species of antelope and quite a few tourists! In our view it is the best place in the whole of Africa to see so many different species around watering holes at one time, but it can be VERY busy. The Skeleton Coast is quite simply one of the most breathtaking and unique places on earth. The Atlantic Ocean crashes onto a shoreline where seals congregate in colonies of thousands, against a backdrop of sand dunes taller than skyscrapers. This area is dramatic, wild and unbelievably beautiful. It is like nowhere else in Africa. The Skeleton Coast is a must for any Namibia based itinerary. Best of Namibia
Best Namibia Safari LodgesSkeleton Coast Camp is regarded in the industry as one of the finest camps in Africa, let alone Namibia. The scenery on offer here, as with the Kunene region in Northern Namibia, is the very best of a country that is most famous for its natural beauty.
Desert Rhino Camp is located in the private Palmwag Concession in the heart of Damaraland. The reserve is home to the highest concentration of wildlife outside Namibia’s Etosha National Park and most importantly the largest free roaming black rhino population in Africa.
Ongava Game lodge is the largest of Wilderness Safaris lodges in Etosha and ultimately are least favourite. As much as we appreciate the quality of the operational side of this lodge we don’t see the point of spending the same amount here as at Ongava Tented Lodge but getting what we believe is a far less quality experience. |
