Chole Mjini: Our ViewThe main drawback of Chole Mjini is its lack of beach – it’s more like a creek but then again, Mafia is not so much about great beaches. Again, we bang on about the pool. Tanzanian heat is just too strong to not have one and as at some points of the day you cannot swim because of the tides, a pool is essential. However, the accommodation is fantastic, with lovely rustic rooms set up on stilts in the trees. It is also now under new management which will give the place a new lease of life We give Pole Mjini 3 palms as it is not quite the standard it could be, but good value for money and only attracts the non fussy type. Chole Mjini: The DetailLocated on Mafia Island and set up as a partnership between Jean and Anne de Villiers and the people of Chole Mjini. It aims to promote tourism and directly benefit the local community and it succeeds. A significant proportion of the revenue received for every guest goes towards community development projects. So far this has facilitated the building of a primary school, kindergarten, market and clinic, and there are more projects in progress. This small lodge is unique. It has no fence around it, and simply merges with the village. Six tree-houses stand on stilts, high up in the trees. From your house in the tree-tops, you look over the mangroves to the sea beyond. Each has its own bathroom, at the base of the trees, with compositing toilet and romantic open-air showers with plenty of hot water on demand. In the main banda you will find large comfy cushions for relaxing on reference books, novels, a selection of games and a central table for dining. Nicely tucked away in its own gardens, Kinasi is small, well-established and charismatic, with great food, activities and rooms. Best of all for diving the Mafia Marine Park and fishing, from here or its fishing camp, Lua Cheia.

Pole Pole is a very peaceful and relaxed lodge; as soon as you arrive you instantly forget about the outside world and give in to a Pole Pole time.

Mchanga Beach Lodge is a real find and is still very much an undiscovered lodge on a great little beach. Set away from the large hotel resorts both up and down the coast, the feeling of the lodge is of being in an unspoilt enclave.
