ECHO BEACH

Zanzibar, East Coast

Echo Beach: Our View

Echo Beach is the perfect ‘get away from it all’ destination.  Set on the kind of beach that has made Zanzibar famous that stretches from Chwaka Bay in the north for about 30 kilometers south.  The lodge has no crowds, no organised fun, just unpretentious comfort, relaxed service and good food.  The price is superb in comparison with many other hotels on the island and the food really is VERY good.  Overall, a great value self confessed 3 to 4 star hotel that has a superb beach and a stunning menu.  If you are looking to spend your money on a fantastic beach and good but not over the top accommodation, then look no further!

We give Echo Beach 4 palms as it really stands out in its category of small hotels. Lovely food and excellent value for money.

Echo Beach: The Detail

Located just South of Breezes Beach Club on the south eastern coastline of Zanzibar, this small, no frills beach lodge has comfortable bandas set amidst beautiful gardens.   Each of the rooms comprises large, modern wet rooms (with quality British fittings) and air conditioned bedrooms with custom made King Zanzibari beds.  There are good views of the sea from the bedrooms and comfortably furnished private terraces.

A short distance from the bandas is the large swimming pool and a few steps more, the white coral sand of the unspoilt  beach which stretches for miles in each direction.  There is also a beauty spa and dive centre that compliment the lodge very well.

The open air restaurant, supervised by the owner/chef with more than 20 years experience in France and UK, has a reputation for excellent food. The menu features traditional Swahili and international cuisine with emphasis on the wonderful local seafood and home-grown vegetables.  Dinner is 3 course a la carte with a menu that changes daily.  Breakfast an optional full English breakfast!

Echo Beach: Client Reviews

We visited Echo Beach after a safari in Tanzania and it was an excellent way to end our trip. The transfer is quite long but once we were there we felt like we had everything we wanted. We went there to relax and do very little and the destination is perfect for that. Our room was wonderful – an upper floor room with a balcony over-looking the pool, beach and the sea. The bed was very comfortable and the room is decorated with style but also in keeping with the part of the world in which you are in. The bar area was great; lively and with different tasty (and very strong!) cocktails on offer each night. Given that you are a captive audience we didn’t feel that the drinks were expensive. The pool is very nice too and although we didn’t really do very much there were diving (scuba and snorkelling) trips and excursions available. The excursions are run by a different company though and we felt were not good value for money so we didn’t indulge. I have to make special mention of the food, which was superb. Half-board was better value than full board though. The breakfast is served until quite late and dinner starts quite early so we often skipped lunch or just paid a few dollars to share a toastie or something light – a full lunch didn’t feel necessary. You wouldn’t want to spoil your appetite for the wonderful choices available at dinner time…
I would definitely recommend Echo Beach after a safari trip – in fact we did recommend it to two of our friends as part of their honeymoon so I can’t speak more highly than that.

Echo Beach- we had a great time here, and it was really relaxing. Our lodge was very nice, and the food throughout was excellent. The staff were all really friendly although some of them were quite new and their English wasn't too good. One example of this was that a cocktail of the day was advertised at the bar but when we ordered it the barman didn't know how to make it so gave us something completely different!  However whenever there was an issue the owners and management were more than willing to help resolve it.

EchoBeach, Zanzibar. Transfer to Zanzibar was not complicated, just a little delayed due to problems with other flights. We were able to go straight from Ruaha (via a couple of hops in selous) to Zanzibar without changing planes, and we were met with no problems and driven across the island to Echo Beach. This hotel is an absolute gem, with an exquisite beachside location. The food was stunning, with lunch options ranging from $8 - $15. There was always a big enough choice for evening meals and tasty cocktails. The owners were very friendly and interested in what we had been up to.

One of our favourite hotels on Zanzibar and one of the best along the East African coast. The beach here is the best on Zanzibar and unlike much of the east coast, is free of hawkers and general hustlers. Nungwi village just down the coast is a great place to go out and have a few drinks or a bite of lunch.

What a lodge! We really like Shooting Star for a number of reasons: the view is stunning, the pool superb, the rooms are all spacious with the added bonus of air-con and the food really is good.

Mchanga Beach Lodge is a real find and is still very much an undiscovered lodge on a great little beach. Set away from the large hotel resorts both up and down the coast, the feeling of the lodge is of being in an unspoilt enclave.
