FUNDU LAGOON
Pemba
Fundu Lagoon: Our ViewFundu is one of Tanzania’s most famous but also controversial beach resorts. Located on Pemba Island the reason to come to Fundu is for its remote location, range of activity options and high quality diving. There are three categories of room all at different prices, ranging from superior suites and junior suites to hillside and standard rooms. The suites are exceptional with private plunge pools and large decking areas. The only negative for Fundu is the quality of its beach as it is nowhere near as good as anywhere on Zanzibar! However that really is the only negative…....overall we believe it to be a great hotel! Fundu is remote, funky and fun. A great lodge to get away from the crowds of Zanzibar and one of the only lodges in the whole region that creates a tangibly cool atmosphere. We give Fundu Lagoon 4 palms, choosing not to give it 5 palms simply because it is not cheap to stay here. In summary, an expensive option but one that is better than the vast majority of its competition! Fundu Lagoon: Fast Facts$430 per person per night (high season)
Fundu Lagoon: The DetailFundu Lagoon offers top quality accommodation and food in an up market, but environmentally sympathetic, style. The rooms are very private tents "under makuti" and are in either beachside or hilltop positions; apart from the superior suites which are permanent structures. They are all decked out with hand finished chunky wooden teak floors and connected with 'nature-trail' style rustic wooden rope-banister walkways. The open restaurant, with bar at its centre, is the height of casual elegance - all billowing white nets, with a fine aroma of fresh coffee. Guests can enjoy a sumptuous international menu, with great attention to detail, while enjoying views of the beach and sea. Staff are immaculately dressed and friendly and there is an overall sense that the place is well-run and guests' needs are paramount. Nearer to the designer gift shop and reception, the hotel has the surprising atmosphere of a more glitzy big hotel. From here guests look out over the long wooden jetty and dark, golden beach, and watch Pemba fishermen passing back and forth and docking their hand crafted vessels to unload the catch of the day. Fundu Lagoon has a fleet of more modern boats for diving, snorkelling and water sports, and a beautiful catamaran can take guests out for sailing and sunset cruises. Charters can also be arranged to Zanzibar and Stone Town. Fundu Lagoon: Client ReviewsThe "Lagoon" was of course magnificent and Julia Bishop is obviously an excellent manager with a skill in maintaining civilisation against the odds. The diving there was also very good and the organisation relaxed, accommodating and helpful. Richard Underwood We had a great holiday thanks. Regarding Fundu Lagoon, our first impression was just how magically the lodge appeared from the jungle as we approached on the boat - it was like something out of James Bond! The weather was volatile, but like diving instructor Phil told us, it (almost) never rains on Masali Island, which was absolutely picturesque, both above and below water. The food was to die for. This is a really important aspect for Karina and I and its taste, variety and quality was exceptional. Finally, and most significantly, the staff's quality of service and hospitality was outstanding. Quiet, away from it, all but with fabulous rooms, great food and friendly unpretentious service. This is the best value beach accommodation and one of the most beautiful small lodges to be found anywhere in Tanzania.
