With its the relaxed, peaceful character, stylish charm and fine swimming pool, we believe Kinasi to be the best place on Mafia. Nicely tucked away in its own gardens, Kinasi is small, well-established and charismatic, with great food, activities and rooms. Kinasi makes the most of its location for diving the Mafia Marine Park and fishing, either from here or its fishing camp, Lua Cheia.
Kinasi gets 4 palms because of its great positioning on the island and in the market. There is nothing like it nearby.
It is very hard to rank lodges with one simple measure! But we have tried, and herewith an explanation of our system.
We are awarding 'palms' to beach locations and 'paws' to safari lodges.
Our ranking is subjective (it is the office consensus, after much arguing), and tries to reflect value for money as well as overall quality. Therefore we may award just three palms to certain 'five star' lodges in the hotel tick-box sense, or five paws to some superb, unashamed 'three star' accommodation that consistently provides superb quality experiences for the price.
We care a great deal about location, whether in the bush or on the beach, and in many cases this has influenced our choice. It is unorthodox, it may seem at odds with the world view, but we can explain... and we urge you to call us to discuss!

Kinasi Lodge: The Detail
Consisting of fourteen palm-thatched bungalows, Kinasi Lodge is set around a voluptuously hilly, palm filled garden, and each has hammocks slung in the shade of their own private veranda.
Guests enjoy views over the Chole pass and Chole Island from each room and are lulled to sleep by the soft sounds of the whispering palms. Great attention to detail has been paid to all areas of the lodge, with an eye for comfort and artisan styling throughout. The open-sided sitting room around the bar is comfortable and well furnished, complete with cushions, magazines and a reference library for local interests.
The swimming pool has been designed to include a poolside barbecue and bar and is surrounded by flower beds. The main impetus of a stay at Kinasi is generally based around making the most of their fleet of boats, which include a number of traditional lateen sailing dhows, two small dive boats and a vast 85 horsepower game fishing and diving boat. The closest beach is not the best, but guests then tend to spend their days out exploring the pristine waters, islands and sandbanks that surround Mafia Island, and return to the lodge each night for delicious cocktails and supper.
Kinasi prides itself on its cooking and prepares lavishly extravagant picnics and meals, with especially excellent seafood and home made breads, yoghurts and sauces and a penchant for an endless variety of soups. It is a poor place to diet.

EchoBeachis the perfect ‘get away from it all’ destination. Set on the kind of beach that has made Zanzibar famous, and stretches from Chwaka Bay in the north for about 30 kilometers south.
One of our favourite hotels on Zanzibar and one of the best along the East African coast. The beach here is the best on Zanzibar and unlike much of the east coast, is free of hawkers and general hustlers. Nungwi village just down the coast is a great place to go out and have a few drinks or a bite of lunch.
Quiet, away from it, all but with fabulous rooms, great food and friendly unpretentious service. This is the best value beach accommodation and one of the most beautiful small lodges to be found anywhere in Tanzania.
