Mainland Coast & Islands
The allure of Zanzibar often means that the benefits of alternative islands and stunning mainland coast locations are overlooked; leaving them crowd-free for us! If diving is not a main focus, we wholly recommend staying on the mainland coast. The beaches here are fabulous, generally deserted and good value. There is little to do in many cases, but a stay here at the beginning or end of a trip is a neat way to relax.
Beyond Zanzibar's main island, Pemba Island is just 30 mins flight north, and Mafia island is 45 mins south. Both are primarily diving locations, the beaches do not compare to those on Zanzibar, but there are fine options for those wishing to avoid crowds and enjoy thriving coral reefs.
Exceptional Hideaway
We do not usually flag individual lodges on these general pages, but one particular gem deserves a mention. Ras Kutani, just 5 minutes South of Dar, never fails to impress. With just 15 rooms including four beautiful suites, Ras Kutani sits on a beautiful beach, with an atmosphere of idyllic luxe-beach-cool. This is a perfect place to start or end your holiday, and would cost twice the price on Zanzibar! This is a perfect place to relax, with so little to do; those needing activities should limit their stay.
Recommended in this area:
Tanzania Mainland Coast
Quiet, away from it, all but with fabulous rooms, great food and friendly unpretentious service. This is the best value beach accommodation and one of the most beautiful small lodges to be found anywhere in Tanzania.
Mafia Island
With its the relaxed, peaceful character, stylish charm and fine swimming pool, we believe Kinasi to be the best place on Mafia. Nicely tucked away in its own gardens, Kinasi is small, well-established and charismatic, with great food, activities and rooms. Best of all for diving the Mafia Marine Park and fishing, from here or its fishing camp, Lua Cheia.
Pemba
Although Fundu's beach isn't as good as some of the beaches on Zanzibar, they have access to nearby islands which are fabulous.
