MATEMWE BUNGALOWS

Zanzibar, East Coast

Matemwe Bungalows: Our View

Matemwe Bungalows is lovely small lodge with a relaxed atmosphere, airy rooms and great views out to Mnemba Island.  A great place to relax and enjoy lying back on your hammock looking out onto the Indian Ocean.  We love Matemwe for offering a place to escape from some of the more crowded beaches on Zanzibar.

Matemwe is great and gets 4 Palms, the only slight down side is the beach is not the best on the island.

Matemwe Bungalows: The Detail

Matemwe Bungalows has just 12  thatched and whitewashed bungalows, extending along a grassy stretch over a private, pale sandy beach, linked by flower-covered walkways to an open restaurant.  The restaurant is highly recommended, specialising in seafood and has an original and diverse menu, with views over the Indian Ocean.  There is a southerly second beach where local children play and fishermen draw in and out their nets with the tides.  Please note that tides are extreme all along this coastline, meaning periods of such high tide that the beach disappears.

The rooms retain a rustic atmosphere and renovations have enhanced the hand-crafted elegance, with sprung mattress beds now built onto raised plinths to ensure lazy ocean views.  All rooms are self contained and include wonderful Persian baths, using solar power for electricity and hot water, and each has their own hammock on the veranda.

Activities include sailing in traditional ngalawa outriggers, snorkelling, diving and big-game fishing, as well as reef-walks across the reef in front of the bungalows.  Bicycle-hire and day trips with picnics are also possible.

Matemwe Bungalows: Client Reviews

I am very glad that we decided to end our trip at Matemwe Bungalows where the foods was fantastic and again the level of service exceptional.

Matemwe Bungalows - very good food and service.  The manager Dorette was a very nice lady and attentive.  We were put in the bungalow right at the very end below the retreat and due to it being such a long walk and feeling like you were next to the car park we asked to move and she dealt with the request quickly and moved us to No 5.  She said before this that the rooms were all the same but we discovered that no 5 was bigger as it had 2 beds – the main one and also one upstairs.  No 12 only had 1 bed and was definitely smaller.    The diving outfit there is of a high standard and they knew as soon as we arrived that Jules was signed up to do his PADI and had all arrangements in place.  He fortunately was the only learning to dive so had 1 to 1 tuition.   The only thing was you told us that laundry was included but Dorette said it was only included if you stay the retreat but she did kindly do it for us. Everything else was exactly as you described it.

Matemwe was great......the retreat is really excellent with the butler, plunge pool, terrace etc- you really do not have to do anything if you don't want to!

Kasha is good value for money. Although, it lacks a beach like most destinations in this area, it does compromise this well with great facilities in-house.

One of our favourite hotels on Zanzibar and one of the best along the East African coast. The beach here is the best on Zanzibar and unlike much of the east coast, is free of hawkers and general hustlers. Nungwi village just down the coast is a great place to go out and have a few drinks or a bite of lunch.

When Kilindi started up it was seen as the new number one the island. But after a rather lengthy and painful teething process it hasn’t really delivered what the price tag should produce.
