PONGWE BEACH HOTEL
Zanzibar, East Coast
Pongwe Beach Hotel: Our ViewFor those of us who want an economical beach break, Pongwe is a good option. Although we do find that for those of us with itchy feet, Pongwe is just too remote…the snorkeling and dive trips take at least an hour in a car each way! Yes it has a good reputation and yes the beach is good….but we question whether the personal service and overall standards that made the lodge famous are as good as they used to be. A very good value beach lodge but nothing special. Pongwe gets 3 palms as it is excellent value for money and the beach is great. The area is very quiet and in terms of completely shutting off from the outside world. Pongwe Beach Hotel: Fast Facts$130 per person per night (high season)
Pongwe Beach Hotel: The DetailRun by Val, who learnt his trade in the large hotels of London, this hotel aims at the 3 star price bracket. The food is good without being overly complex, and the service is the same. The beach itself is a beautiful little cove that is sheltered on both sides by a small coral outcrop, and, as the hotel owns the land around it as well, there are no hawkers on the beach at all. The charm is certainly in the setting with the beach ‘arguably’ the best on Zanzibar! The setting is without doubt beautiful, and although Pongwe’s activities and facilities are somewhat limited, the lodge has its own traditional wooden long boat that provides the opportunity to go fishing. They can also organise snorkeling out at Mnemba Atoll where you will find many coral species and marine life; and at Kizimkazi where sharks, dolphins and turtles can be found. Pongwe Beach Hotel: Client ReviewsPongwe was stunning and a perfect place to laze about for a few days. We had a "garden view" room (the beach front rooms were all taken when we booked) and while it was set back from the beach that didn't matter at all as we still had a view of the beach from our front porch and we spent all of our time on the beach, by the pool or in the restaurant anyway. Pongwe is a low key beach resort, where you decide your own pace, it's not a big Club Med style resort, but more like some of the beach resorts in Thailand, where the thrill of the place is relaxing and deciding what you do rather than having activities thrown at you (although they were available if you wanted them). Shawn Kirby 2010 Amazing I think sums it up, We had a great time, your choice of accomodation was spot on. Pongwe was so relaxing and a great way to start the holiday the day in Stone town was good fun and thanks so much for the guided tour and booking the roof top dinner. Alex Hotston 2009 Pongwe beach was a real find, just like you'd said, the food was great and the beach first class. EchoBeachis the perfect ‘get away from it all’ destination. Set on the kind of beach that has made Zanzibar famous, and stretches from Chwaka Bay in the north for about 30 kilometers south.

Mchanga Beach Lodge is a real find and is still very much an undiscovered lodge on a great little beach. Set away from the large hotel resorts both up and down the coast, the feeling of the lodge is of being in an unspoilt enclave.

What a lodge! We really like Shooting Star for a number of reasons: the view is stunning, the pool superb, the rooms are all spacious with the added bonus of air-con and the food really is good.
