TEMBO HOTEL
Stone Town, Zanzibar
Tembo Hotel: Our ViewThis hotel has let us down in the past and for that reason we do not like to recommend the place. Some rooms are very good but the reality is that the service standards are not anywhere near the quality of its competitors. More importantly however, it is a dry hotel which for those of us who like that sundowner is nothing short of a nightmare! The Tembo hotel is a good economical choice only if you are fully aware that the purpose of your stay there is to keep cost down. It does not meet the standards you would expect on honeymoon or holiday but serves a purpose for the traveller on tight budget. It gets 1 palm. Tembo Hotel: Fast Facts$110 per person per night (high season)
Tembo Hotel: The DetailOn Forodhani Street in Zanzibar Stone Town, the Tembo is less ostentatious than the Serena yet is also located in an impressive old building on the waterfront, designed around a central courtyard with a swimming pool and beachfront terrace. As a result, the Tembo has a breezy cool and pleasant atmosphere, with good rooms facing the sea and horizon (an especially worthwhile aspect during the hotter months between December and March). Rooms are furnished with antique Zanzibari furniture and sunken Persian baths with showers, and include fridge, telephone, satellite tv, hairdryer and air-conditioning. Nevertheless it remains an elegantly authentic choice - to the extent that it is also Muslim run and serves no alcohol. There is a bar opposite and plenty of choice for sundowners nearby. The price is good value for such decent rooms, (the best are sea-view), but as a result staff seem reluctant to go out of their way to look after you. You may also likeStone Town, Zanzibar
Located in Zanzibars Stone Town, it is a pretty house that was at one time a tea house belonging to a wealthy Zanzibarian merchant. Situated directly opposite the Serena Inn, personal service and an oasis of tranquility in the otherwise busy surrounds of Stone Town, this is a fantastic choice.
Stone Town, Zanzibar
One of the small luxury hotels of the world, the Serena Inn is not so in keeping with Stone Towns character but quite frankly, that is a good thing! It offers a great escape from what can be quite a hectic little town. The pool is the nicest in Stone Town with great views out to sea and a great place for sunset cocktails. Again, attention has to be paid to which room you book. The prime rooms are especially good value.
