THE SELOUS RETREAT

The Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Retreat: Our View

Located in the far West of Northern Selous, Selous retreat is one of the remotest camps in the park.
In its first year of opening we were put off by the camps location due to poor game densities and questionable quality of guiding. However, three years on and the retreat has calved out an intriguing niche in a market lacking in unique product. We still question the quality of the game viewing here but the camp is certainly beautiful and is the camp in the park to travel to if you want to be pampered and away from the crowds.

We give the Selous Retreat a good 3 paw rating. A great lodge for clients wanting a luxurious lodge in an area of true Wilderness. We just question the overall quality of game in the area.

The Selous Retreat: The Detail

The Retreat, located in North-West Selous. It  is a twelve room lodge that offers good seclusion to the other camps in the park, other than being in close proximity to Amara Selous. The lodge is built in the ruin of an old colonial fort and split into various areas, yet still resembles that ruin feel to it. Sadly it is not the most intriguing design and this doesn’t allow for an atmospheric stay.

The location of the camp is renowned for having poor game, which has never really picked up. The camp is located on the Ruaha River, at a very wide point offering spectacular views. But given it is so wide, you really need a lot of water to make boating possible and therefore it doesn’t favour travel in the dry season which is the best time to travel.

The general feel of the lodge is that is trying to be a Zanzibar hotel but in the bush, and it just doesn’t work. The main areas are very open and unforgiving, and if the camps wasn’t full it would feel very empty and cold. The rooms are actually quite nice, and the selling point of this lodge. But still, they are not very safari.

The main approach to this lodge is very holistic and that is what the owner is trying to get out of it. Not a hard core safari camp that offer great game and a top bush experience.

Selous Safari Camp is the best luxury tented camp in the Selous and up there with the best in Africa. The camp itself is of top quality and the service and guiding is as good as it gets...needless to say it is in an outstanding game area.

We really like Beho Beho, and not just for the luxury! It combines all the elements that make the safari experience memorable, with beautiful views, great game and fantastic guides. In our view, it is easily the best lodge in the park and one of the top 3 in Africa!

Set on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River, the lodge is both an expedition base and a safari retreat that has been well loved by safari buffs for a long time and has a great record of excellent guiding.
