GORILLA FOREST LODGE

Uganda

Gorilla Forest Lodge: Our View

Sanctuary Lodge’s Gorilla Forest Lodge, is actually run by the luxury travel company Abercrombie and Kent. The lodge has a fabulous location with the local gorilla group literally looking into clients rooms on a number of occasions. Gorilla’s peeping into your rooms cannot be guaranteed to every client, but the guarantee of A&K’s excellent service is there. A great lodge to explore the area from and a great lodge for clients who, after a potentially long gorilla trek, do not want to face climbing up the hills to Clouds lodge, the only other top end gorilla lodge in the park.

Gorilla Lodge gets 4 paws and verges on getting 5. However the fact that we rate the nearby Clouds so highly means that we have to differentiate between the two. A great lodge for elder clientele due to its location on the valley floor and subsequent ease at the end of a trek.

Gorilla Forest Lodge: The Detail

Gorilla Forest Camp is the only camp located within the UNESCO World heritage Site Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Home to just over half the world's last surviving population of mountain gorillas, Bwindi offers a unique opportunity for the adventurous traveller. Gorilla Forest Camp is the perfect luxurious base for a tracking experience.

The 8 large en suite ‘tents’ with a bathtub looking out onto the forest are ideal after a day searching for gorillas in the forest. The camp has a bar and dining cottage overlooking the rainforest. Guests can sit around the campfire at night whilst enjoying the crystal clear mountain sky.

Rwanda
Sabyinyo is Rwanda’s leading gorilla lodge. Located approximately three hours from the capital Kigali, Saybinyo Silverback Lodge is a stunningly located property with views over the Virunga Volcanoes range and the Parc National des Volcans. Arguably the finest gorilla lodge anywhere, this lodge is run by the famous Kenyan safari group Governors who operate some of the Masai Mara’s finest safari camps. Service levels and location are the best in the area by far.
Rwanda
Just like the nearby competition, Volcanoes Virunga Lodge has one of the best views over this exceptional scenic region. Run by the famous Volcanoes group, who run many top trips throughout Uganda and Rwanda, Virunga lodge is slightly more affordable than nearby Sabyinyo and yet still offers a good level of service and overall accommodation. Long the best lodge in the area, Sabyinyo how now taken Virunga’s crown and pushed a great lodge down into second place. We are fans of them both but considering the quality offered at Sabyinyo for a little extra, Sabyinyo takes the mantle as no 1 gorilla lodge.

Clouds lodge has to have one of the most amazing settings of any of the lodges we work with. Located high up into the hills the lodge commands views over the entire region and is a magical little place. A real favourite in the office here due to its unpretentious charm and links with the local community, people do need to know that the advantage of the location comes with a slight negative – it’s a hard walk back up to Clouds after a long days gorilla trekking! The rewards of making the trek however are one of the most charming hotels we work with.
