CHONGWE RIVER HOUSE
Lower Zambezi
Chongwe River House: Our ViewYou can be quite excused to arrive into Chongwe River House and feel you have fallen into the Flinstones TV programme – this really is quite a remarkable, unique design. The house is a destination in itself - one that would cater well for families or small groups who want to have all the benefits of a private home. The location is just as superb and the activities and game viewing inside the Lower Zambezi some of the most diverse in Africa. We can certainly assure you that Chongwe River House is unique, and ultimately a breath of fresh air from typical lodge design! Chongwe River House gets 4 paw because although we do not believe it is one of the best camps in the lower Zambezi, it is the best place for a small party wanting a private house and it a truly unique property. Chongwe River House: The DetailChongwe River House is located in Lower Zambezi at the end of a massive winterthorn grove, on the banks of the peaceful Chongwe River, a tributary of the Zambezi. The view of the nearby mountainous escarpment is spectacular. On entering the house, the main room has low bridges over flowing water. From this room you look out over the deck and pool to the river and mountains beyond. All the furniture in the sitting room has been carved from a single huge fallen winterthorn tree, as if it has fallen across the room. Beautifully soft coloured pebbles from the Chongwe River have been embedded in the ceilings. The ground floor bedrooms are each entered through a tunnel which gives the feeling of walking through a cave. The curved entrance gives privacy without the need for doors. The downstairs bathrooms have water pouring out of the stone ceiling instead of the normal shower rose, whilst the upstairs showers are waterfalls. “Taps” are made from bone and wood and the exquisitely carved basins have been carved out of wood and white marble by the famous Zambian artist, Eddie Mumba. The upstairs bedrooms have unusual baths, from which you have a view across the bush. You may also likeLower Zambezi
There are a few camps in Africa that have everything just right....Chiawa is without doubt one of these, regarded by us as one of the top lodges anywhere. The guiding is phenomenal, the location is perfect and this place is run by the family who are the main reason for the Lower Zambezi's success as a National Park.
Lower Zambezi
What a setting and what a great little camp. Our last consultant here had thirty elephant in camp the day he was leaving and literally had to be picked up by vehicle from his room! Recently a vote in the office put Old Mondoro as one of our favourite adventurous camps in the whole of Africa.
South Luangwa
In the office here we just put Luangwa Safari House forward for the Good Safari Guide awards for 'best private home in Africa'. Needless to say, we think it is exceptional!
