Kasaka is hands down the best value lodge in the Lower Zambezi. It is further away from the National Park and perhaps not the most aesthetic camp around, but the rest of this area is seriously pricey and Kasaka opens up this stunning part of Zambia to those on a slightly lower budget who are after a top knotch experience. We recommend staying on the 'wild' side of camp (try and get the wild mango suite) and don't expect huge rooms all with river views, but do get ready for great guiding, a wonderful atmosphere and lots to do; especially when it comes to exploring on the river.

Kasaka River Lodge - The Details

Kasaka River Lodge is found nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River in a game management area. Surrounded by natural bush and just 4km from the Lower Zambezi National Park, this tented camp offers an authentic and memorable safari experience.

Each chalet is secluded amongst the native flora, separated between the 'tame' side and the 'wild' side. The cultivated half of camp has beautifully manicured gardens with a swimming pool in the middle, with the other, more natural, half connected to the main lodge by overhead walkways to allow the wildlife to pass through camp.

There is a lovely main area of the lodge that melts into the surrounding setting of tamarind trees, most meals are eaten here with other guests in camp. For small groups or families of 4 their is the Hippo Pod, a short walk from the main camp and is completely private with your own area for eating, relaxing and a small private pool to cool off while you look over the Zambezi.

There are plenty of activities on offer from this lodge, including fishing, canoeing, boat cruises, walking safaris, day and night drives, community visits including a canoe/boat trip along the river to Tsika Island, this is a really rustic and traditional camp run by the community and great fun for an overnight adventure - you will need to book in advance.

Our family of 4 had the most amazing time at KRL - thank you so much to all the staff for making our stay so special. Our guide was so incredibly well-informed and entertaining on the subject of all the flora and fauna (and even an expert on the night sky). We saw just about everything we hoped to see in Lower Zambezi - lions, zebra, hippos, elephants, crocs, baboons, various species of antelope, buffalo etc etc. But this was just the beginning. We learned so much about the trees, the small mammals and (my personal favourite) the termite mounds!! We did a mix of drives and river-based activities including a canoe trip. They also offer walking safaris and fishing but we could not fit these in! We did take a trip to the local village, visiting the group of ladies who make jewellery (we had collected some beads at home to donate whilst there), the school and the vegetable garden. We would thoroughly recommend this and definitely worth asking the lodge in advance if there is anything in particular you could take to contribute should you have space in your luggage. We also took some footballs and school items.  My strongest memories will be of the "sundowners" by the side of the Zambezi or by the roaring fire at the lodge. And of all the wonderful staff - without exception they were so attentive and always with a warm smile. We stayed in 2 adjacent tents with terraces overlooking the Zambezi. We were on the “wild side” of the camp where tents are linked to the main areas by a wooden bridge under which elephants and baboons roam freely. On the “tame” side people had elephants and hippos right outside their tents. But you feel wonderfully secure and staff insist on accompanying you to and from your room after dark in case of any surprise encounters!
