PUKU RIDGE
South Luangwa
Puku Ridge: Our ViewWe struggle with Puku Ridge simply due to the fact that the Luangwa is known for its privately run camps, or small un-commercial companies. Sanctuary lodges is owned by A&K and so certainly goes against the grain for what makes the Luangwa so famous. However having said all that, the quality of the lodge is as to be expected from Sanctuary lodges and the game viewing area is good. Ultimately we would recommend Puku to older clients, wanting an A&K approach to safari as opposed to the bush camp approach of the other Luangwa companies. Puku Ridge gets 2 paws. The Abercrombie and Kent brand does not go with the spirit of the Luangwa valley. Why people go here when they could go to some of the finest small camps in Africa, is completely beyond us. Quite a nice camp though! Puku Ridge: Fast Facts$640 per person per night (high season)
Puku Ridge: The DetailPuku Ridge Camp is situated in a remote wildlife rich area in the South Luangwa National Park. Named for the elusive Puku antelope that inhabits the Kakumbi Dambo (floodplain), which the camp overlooks, Puku Ridge Camp is built on a hillside, providing stunning vistas of the floodplain and the wildlife that frequents it. Puku Ridge Camp is small and intimate and has been constructed to blend into the local surroundings. The camp offers 6 luxury oversized tents with a wrap around view of the floodplains. Each of the comfortably furnished tents boasts ensuite facilities which provides the option of taking a shower with the sun on your shoulders. All tents feature an indoor and outdoor shower, three-quarter or king size beds, mosquito nets, private deck, ceiling fan and hairdryer. Tea /coffee is brought to the rooms each morning. Wildlife to be seen includes elephant, lion, wild dog, buffalo and a wide variety of antelope in addition to endemic species such as the Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cooksons wildebeest. This is an excellent area for leopards. There is the full range of game drives and night drives in the South Luangwa National Park using open 4X4 vehicles driven by knowledgeable guides. Two game activities per day. The emphasis in this area is the wonderful opportunities for walking safaris and night drives. On night game drives, guests are to return to camp by 2000. Walking Safaris are guided walks by a professional guide and an armed national parks scout. You may also likeSouth Luangwa
What a truly exceptional camp! Tafika is one of the remaining owner run camps in Africa with John and Carol ever present. The result is a camp that genuinely cares for each and every one of its guests.

Views, views and more views – the setting at Kakuli is spectacular. The tents are fully enclosed and so overall, this camp is not as rustic as the sister camps Luwi or Nsolo. However Kakuli offers a great bush experience for those who want to feel a little more ‘secure’ – this is yet again a fantastic camp from Norman Carr.

Although the whole idea of the bush camp is to be in the bush, away from all luxurious etc. the fact is that there is a market that doesn’t want to loose the luxury! Mchenja caters for this market and does it damn well!
