SAND RIVERS
Selous
Sand Rivers: Our ViewLong regarded as one of the best lodges in East Africa, Richard Bonham’s Sand Rivers Selous is well-loved for its classic safari style and great river location. Famous for being one of the finest walking camps in the country and offering an adventurous yet high quality safari experience, Sand Rivers only has one downfall – its high price - which is double other good camps in the park. Leaving that aside however, this camp rightly holds its place as one of the best lodges in the park. A camp with a great reputation and a world class walking operation. The views are superb, and as always the guiding here can be exceptional. However Sand Rivers suffers in our experience from the quality of game viewing compared to lodges elsewhere in the park. As a result Sand Rivers only gets 4 paws - it is superb for the river...but we question the overall game viewing. Sand Rivers: Fast Facts$1065 per person per night (high season)
Sand Rivers: The DetailSand Rivers is located in the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania slightly west of the main game area on the Rufuji River. The camp has its own airstrip, Kiba which is very close connecting to Dar es Salaam only 45 minutes flight time. Sand Rivers Lodge is run by Nomad Tanzania who have lodges throughout Tanzania which all carry a adventurous yet luxurious approach to lodge design. The main area has views out onto the Rufuji River and all aspects of the main area and the suites are very open. It was originally built in 1984 by Richard Bonham who used this area of the Selous for his famous portered walking safaris throughout the eighties, when the area was all but unknown. The lodge is at the centre of many diverse habitats - from gorges to open plains, woodland to lakes Accommodation at Sand Rivers is in spacious open-fronted cottages raised on the banks of the Rufiji River. There are 5 standard rooms, 2 suites, and a new ‘honeymoon’ cottage - The Rhino House; all have en-suite bathrooms. Fly-camping is a highly recommended part of any safari to Sand Rivers Selous, and is available at an extra supplement. The fly camps are shared, and guests sleep under spacious mosquito net tents. Sand Rivers offers some of the best walking safari in Tanzania. Sand Rivers: Client ReviewsSand Rivers was exceptional because we had a private guide for just the two of us, the opportunity to take a boat trip upriver and do some fishing in addition to the standard game drives was also a nice change. Selous Safari Camp is the best luxury tented camp in the Selous and up there with the best in Africa. The camp itself is of top quality and the service and guiding is as good as it gets...needless to say it is in an outstanding game area.
Selous
We really like Beho Beho, and not just for the luxury! It combines all the elements that make the safari experience memorable, with beautiful views, great game and fantastic guides. In our view, it is easily the best lodge in the park and one of the top 3 in Africa! Ruaha
Another of the superb Selous Safari Company properties, Jongomero is a beautifully designed and maintained camp. Like its sister in the Selous, since its overhaul, it really does stand out as a luxury safari camp with a quality finishing all round. The area that it is located in is consistently very good for lion and large herds of buffalo.
