MDONYA OLD RIVER CAMP
Ruaha
Mdonya Old River Camp: Our ViewRaw, rough and really really good! Mdonya excels at creating a camp that fits into its surroundings, offering a truly authentic safari product that is one of the best game experiences in the whole country. Even though the camp may be somewhat basic, this is the intention; Mdonya aims to give guests the true bush experience. The location certainly helps, with an abundance of lion, buffalo and elephant in the surrounding land. An excellent value camp. We give Mdonya 4 paws as it is everything a safari camp should be as long as you are not looking for luxury. Mdonya Old River Camp: Fast Facts$370 per person per night (high season)
Mdonya Old River Camp: The DetailMdonya Old River Camp is located in the Ruaha National Park in Southern Tanzania ideally combinable with Selous but also accessible by plane from Katavi to the West and Arusha in the North of Tanzania. The game area here is very good and also accessible to the Mwagusi area which also very good. The communal area at Mdonya is a simple tented dining area and lounge area with outdoor sitting area around a camp fire in the middle of the wilderness. A very simple but adventurous camp set up. Located right at the centre of a wilderness area, the dining and lounge tents are under sycamore fig trees overlooking the dry river bed, so sitting in the camp with a book and a pair of binoculars may be quite rewarding. With just 11 twin or double tents with two of these convertible to family units, all with en-suite out door facilities, (it is possible to shower watching the rising moon or a shooting star!), Mdonya Old River Camp is a small adventurous lodge offering a fun wild safari experience. The tents are simple yet comfortable, furnished with comfortable beds large verandas where clients can relax and observe wildlife that rambles down the old river bed. Mdonya has good open sided shared vehicles and game driving is the main activity. Currently walking safari is not possible at this camp. Mdonya Old River Camp: Client Reviews
We left lake manze in the morning for the flight to Ruaha which was a little late. No problems with the pick up by the Mdonya Old River Camp representatives and we headed to the camp for lunch. Unfortunately our jeep broke down about 7km from the camp! The driver couldn't fix it and the radio wasn't working - the battery was dead - but they managed to call the camp on their mobile phone (better reception than I get in suffolk!!). So after a bit of a wait the mechanics arrived and another jeep to ferry us back to camp. We were ravenous by the time we got there but there was plenty of lunch! We then set off for an evening game drive and had fabulous views of the sunset. The landscape was very different to the selous and we enjoyed seeing the same animals with a different backdrop. The following 2 days were full game drives - sometimes you would go for quite a long time without seeing anything but then there would be loads! we saw Lesser Kudu, Grants Gazelle, Ostriches, Hyraxes and Dikdiks that we had not seen before. On both days we had lunch in designated picnic sites. These have toilets - not particularly pleasant but set away from the food areas. We got through quite a lot of anti bacterial hand gel! We saw a lion stalking some zebra. On the day we left, on the way to the airport we finally saw a Leopard! Even the guides were impressed with the view and took photos. In both camps we were able to recharge our camera batteries with no issues (although we did take spare batteries for both cameras).
A Glarvey 2011 Mdonya river camp is superb value for money .Our love for wildlife was recognised from the outset , and we enjoyed a vehicle to ourselves for the 4 nights we were there. The food was great although to be fair we did not always know exactly what we were eating ,and the camp ambience fantastic. In the north of Ruaha National Park, Mwagusi is a rare gem on the safari circuit, a privately owned lodge in possibly the best game area of Ruaha. If you are looking for a serious big game safari, look no further.
Selous
This camp is exceptional value, located in an incredibly game rich area of the Selous where you can boat, walk and game drive all straight from the camp. This camp is not trying to be something it's not- an excellent authentic no frills safari experience, we really recommend it!
Ruaha
Another of the superb Selous Safari Company properties, Jongomero is a beautifully designed and maintained camp. Like its sister in the Selous, since its overhaul, it really does stand out as a luxury safari camp with a quality finishing all round. The area that it is located in is consistently very good for lion and large herds of buffalo.
