Pole Pole: Our ViewPole Pole is a very peaceful and relaxed lodge; as soon as you arrive you instantly forget about the outside world and give in to a Pole Pole time… so a great place to base your self while you make the most of Mafia’s great diving. But there is one major flaw, no pool! When it its 37 degrees and the tide’s out you just can’t swim! It would otherwise be such a great little lodge. We give Pole Pole 3 palms due to it lacking a pool and on site dive centre. For the same money and location, you can get all you need at Kinasi Lodge next door. Pole Pole: The DetailIt is a good option for Mafia Island visitors, providing Italian-managed accommodation in just a couple of very fine wooden cabins on stilts. These are immaculately comfortable with a certain swiss chalet atmosphere, and each have wide, elegant balconies overlooking the Chole Channel. The dining area is also wood decking, raised on stilts near the waters edge and the cooking is reputedly fine. Pole Pole (slowly slowly in Swahili), is what this place is all about; relax and take things easy, in African time. The lodge is so small that it might be a good choice for a couple of couples, who would practically have the run of the place. With its the relaxed, peaceful character, stylish charm and fine swimming pool, we believe Kinasi to be the best place on Mafia. Nicely tucked away in its own gardens, Kinasi is small, well-established and charismatic, with great food, activities and rooms. Best of all for diving the Mafia Marine Park and fishing, from here or its fishing camp, Lua Cheia.

One of our favourite hotels on Zanzibar and one of the best along the East African coast. The beach here is the best on Zanzibar and unlike much of the east coast, is free of hawkers and general hustlers. Nungwi village just down the coast is a great place to go out and have a few drinks or a bite of lunch.

Matemwe Bungalows is great small lodge with a relaxed atmosphere, airy rooms and great views out to Mnemba Island. A great place to relax being near a great diving spot and enjoy lying back on your hammock looking out onto the Indian Ocean. |
