Other Parks

Zimbabwe has a number of private game areas, the main advantage of which is that restrictive National Park regulations do not apply.  The only private reserve lodge that we currently sell is the fabulous Pamushana in Malilangwe - the other options really pale in comparison to this gem in the wilderness.

Travelling off the beaten track in Zimbabwe is getting easier than it was, but is still not easy.  Some options worth considering are the Canoe trails that run from Mana Pools to Kariba, the rock art and bizarre scenery of the Matopos, the ruins of the Great Zimbabwe, and the Eastern Highlands which are famous for fishing and hiking. So there are options if you are looking to go really out there on your Zimbabwean adventure, but they as mentioned are quite difficult to access...!

Other than Mana Pools and Hwange though, we rarely recommend the other areas because these combined seriously have it all in terms of world-class wildlife, lodges and scenery. We love Zimbabwe, although for the truly adventerous then it is limited in terms of logistics if you are looking to go off the beaten track. Maybe try combining your safari with a visit to the beautiful and wonderous Victoria Falls for a bit of variation - it is rightly one of the 7 wonders of the world and unmissable if you are passing through ZImbabwe...

Pamushana Lodge: In short, we loved our stay at Pamushana. Amazing place, amazing people, and such a great stay. Everything worked very smoothly and the transfer from JNB to Buffalo Range airport was very smooth, never done that smooth travel in JNB before. The staff was friendly and since day 1 we felt like the same family.
The lodge was in perfect condition and their cooks are simply amazing, we've never so good food in Africa before and best of all, it was local and included game. We've been disappointed in e.g. Kenya when the food was more European pizza-pasta -style. As a private resort it's not as animal rich as some national parks but that was really an advantage as one (read: the guide) had to make some effort to find the animals, especially the more rare ones.
The animals are also less used to cars. In Maasai Mara it was a bit annoying that there was a lion family under every second tree, and the guides made noise simply to wake them up. Zimbabwe got high on our list for future trips so we'll most definitely be back.
