Skeleton Coast
The Skeleton Coast is quite simply one of the most breathtaking and unique places on earth. The Atlantic Ocean crashes onto a shoreline where seals congregate in colonies of thousands, against a backdrop of sand dunes taller than skyscrapers. This area is dramatic, wild and unbelievably beautiful. It is like nowhere else in Africa. The Skeleton Coast is a must for any Namibia based itinerary.
The main attraction to the Skeleton Coast is the fact that the entire coastline here is so utterly different to any of the places we have travelled, anywhere in the world. It is such a unique place that it is actually very difficult to explain the draw of this area.
The Skeleton Coast can be seen as somewhat of an empty, haunting area but closer inspection reveals an ecosystem full of life - colonies of seals mix with flamingos and pelicans, whilst further North long haired brown hyena hunt with jackals and the occasional beach based lion pride. Many a ship has failed to navigate this coastline; wrecks litter the shoreline. Diamond mines and ghost towns, all signs of Namibia's fascinating history, are found in some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. As a summary we would say that the unique game viewing on offer here is unrivalled. Nowhere else in Africa do you get wildlife like this. Many people find a strange attraction to the areas eeriness, and are rewarded by a lengthy stay in the area. It is one of our favorite destinations. The Skeleton Coast: Accommodation choices
There are a few accommodation options dealing with the self drive market, Cape Cross lodge and Terrace Bay being the main two. However the Skeleton Coast is an area that needs to be flown through to fully appreciate the power of the desert and there are two companies that excel. The first is the Schoeman brothers Skeleton Coast Safaris company. Offering no frills accommodation but an unbelievable level of experience and guiding knowledge, the Skeleton Coast Safaris are well regarded amongst safari addicts as one of the best experiences in Africa, let alone just in Namibia. Wilderness Safaris also run their Skeleton Coast Camp in the area and offer similar experiences as the Schoeman’s, albeit all from one main lodge as opposed to separate camps and without the extensive flying that the Schoeman’s offer.
