FUNZI KEYS

Indian Ocean Islands

Funzi Keys: Our View

From its simple inception, the lodge has been slowly growing both in size and in stature. Set far away from the madding crowd, the lodge is a great place to get away from it all. Each of the rooms has been thought out and designed with its particular location in mind. This gives each room a true feeling of individuality and comfort. With superb service and a policy of food when you want it, there is no need to rush or stress at all.

The only drawback to the lodge is that, if you are looking for a “beach as far as the eye can see” then this may not be the place….but, with a superb pool and rooms, and a whole host of activities, the lodge is ideal for families and honeymooners alike and is definitely in the top 5!! (and very good value for money!).

This is a good option if you want a private beach south of Mobassa, a great lodge although the beach is not one of the best- 3 palms

Funzi Keys: The Detail

The lodge started life as a holiday home away from home for Alessandro, Claudia and their family. From the original 2 stone cottages, the accommodation has blossomed to the 9 that now exist and each has been lovingly crafted, with the onus on both beauty and an eye on lasting in the seaside conditions.

The nine spacious cottages set along the high-water line and constructed of stone and thatch, designed to blend unobtrusively with its idyllic beachfront setting and to reflect the influence of the local culture and coastal architecture. Each of the individually designed rooms has a hand carved king-sized four-poster bed and is furnished with local wooden artifacts and colourful fabrics plus a Jacuzzi with spectacular sea view! All cottages are provided with fans, safes and beach accessories in the over-sized bathroom. In front of each cottage is a private sitting area where guests can enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down in total privacy.

At the heart of the lodge, guests can relax and enjoy refreshing drinks served from the dhow-shaped bar or sample delicious island fare featuring freshly caught seafood and locally grown fruits and vegetables in the upper-level restaurant that overlooks the water.

Many guests do little more than unwind on the wooden deck of the free-form pool with a drink while watching the local fishing dhows sail by. For guests that enjoy a little more activity it is possible to enjoy sailing, creek fishing, windsurfing and canoeing or perhaps take a boat trip up the Ramisi River or Funzi Creek for an unforgettable glimpse of kingfishers, crocodiles and even dolphins! sea fishing amongst others.

Lamu
All of the houses are well placed within the village, but we would probably err towards the beach house as it is right on the beach and features a pool and is the last bit of civilisation for the next 14 miles! They are all, however, perfect for a week as a beach and town stay…but don’t forget to bring your own alcohol if you like an evening sundowner as the village (with the exception of the nearby Peponi) is dry!
Lamu
This has rightly been the place to stay in Lamu for the last decade as it continues to provide great levels of service in beautiful surroundings. The town of Shela is less touristy and crowded than the main town of Lamu and is great to have a wander around of an afternoon.
Lamu Beaches
If you have been looking on this web site for which of the beach lodges we think is the best….you may have just found it! With its relaxed feel and spacious rooms, Kiwayu is definitely up there with the best beach lodges in Africa.
