JOYS CAMP
Samburu
Joys Camp: Our ViewShaba National Park is probably one of the least known in Kenya...and long may it remain that way! Joy's was completed in 2007 and is a stunning, semi tented camp set on the fringes of a small lagoon complex. The park is relatively small in size, but has a whole range of different habitats to keep the traveller interested, with striped hyena being a particular favourite. With a reasonable price tag these days, Joy's is probably one of our top 10 in Kenya. Joys is the by far the best place to stay in Shaba National Park, great to just chill out with surprisingly good game- 5 paws! Joys Camp: Fast Facts$650 per person per night (high season)
Joys Camp: The DetailAn elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu; Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The 10 chic canvas bedrooms have breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Each sumptuous tent is uniquely decorated with Boran/Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish camp. Each tent has its own private veranda, ideal for game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba. The eastern corner of the Samburu eco-system, Shaba is a secluded idyll; an arid landscape dotted with lush springs and rocky river gorges. Joy’s Camp is the perfect choice for discerning guests interested in a glimpse of Kenyan history, as well as those looking for an authentic wildlife experience combined with the comfort of a luxury-tented camp. Joy’s Camp, “Forever Free”! Joys Camp: Client ReviewsReally lovely camp, enjoyed the lack of people and sense of isolation. Reminded us a little of camps in Namibia. Had great leopard sightings, including a kill, but just generally really enjoyed the camp. It was really beautiful, camp was gorgeous, facilities excellent. This is a perfect retreat for any large group or family and offers utter seclusion in what is, after all, a relatively small wildlife conservancy.
Mathews Range
Sarara is the germination of the thoughts and beliefs of Ian Craig and Piers and Hilary Bastard, and is a superb example of how community projects can work in Africa to protect the wildlife. With a small and intimate feel to the camp and, as it is still managed by Piers and Hilary, it is a great spot to get a bit of relaxation, a bit of community interaction with the local Samburu, and a bit of game.
Mount Meru
The most significant feature of Elsa’s, apart from the views that stretch for years and the perfect tranquility, is the staff and their attitude in the camp. The camp makes a point of growing most of its own produce and so boasts a wonderful selection of fresh vegetables with which to cook.
