Madagascar is still a fairly off the beaten track destination, which means you have to be careful about picking high quality accommodation. A lot of the options throughout the country are cheap, but there is a catch as they are often not very good quality and the distances between them are huge. So huge, that we would not recommend a driving trip as driving between destinations can take days. The only other option is private charter, which is very expensive. Therefore, if you are set on Madagascar we would only advise venturing there if you have fairly deep pockets.
If you have the budget for it, then Madagascar can be an excellent destination. Our favourites are Miavana which is the most beautiful private island and ultimately the very best of the best. At $2,000 per person per night, so it should be! Down a notch but no less delightful is Mandrare at $700 per person per night and Manafiafy at around $550 per person per night. They are well ran safari-style lodges with their personalised service and intimate atmosphere. Go down a bit more in price to around $450 per person per night, and you have the seriously beautiful Tsarabanjina which is a real office favourite. Also in the same league is Tsara Komba. These are all exceptional options!

Miavana - Nosy Ankao
Dreamy, dreamy dreamy - we put off our trip to Madagascar until Miavana had finally opened and it was amazing - so well worth the wait. Getting to Diego Suarez was an adventure in itself but from then the helicopter to and from the island was a breeze.
