Kapani is certainly one of the best value lodges in the Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa. Built as a permanent lodge rather than a bush camp, Kapani is a great introduction to the Luangwa and is a superb option when booked in conjunction with Norman Carr’s bushcamps. There are a couple of seriously good guides here making Kapani a superb start to a safari, and a very affordable one at that.

Kapani - The Details

Kapani Lodge is closed down in 2016.

Meaning place of Mopani trees, Kapani was built in 1986 by Norman Carr - the pioneer of photographic walking safaris - Kapani remained a private house until he died in 1997. Today Kapani has been transformed into a family-friendly 9 roomed lodge on the banks of a hippo and croc filled lagoon beside the Luangwa River. It's ideal for young families looking for a wonderful safari experience in a game-rich area.

A thatched building in the centre of the camp is home to the 'map room' and library - a place where guests can gather for pre-dinner drinks around an open fire. The bar and dining area are set out on a raised wooden decking area overlooking the lagoon under the shade of a canopy of trees (cheeky baboons and vervets included). A popular hang out is the gorgeously manicured swimming pool just off to the side of camp - very welcome in the hotter months!

The 8 standard rooms give generous space, high ceilings accentuate the size of each room, complete with en suite bathrooms, lounge area and bar/fridge. The Lagoon Suite, Kapani's best room is very similar in style but is detached, even more spacious and perfect for honeymooners. Game often come down to the lagoon in dry months and elephants are frequently found in the camp.

Kapani isn't over-flowing with luxury, but replaces that with character and wonderful service - you're made to feel right at home by the lodge and guiding family and it really is wonderful value for money. Kapani is open all-round making it the perfect green season getaway.
