Luangwa River Camp is located in a really beautiful setting on the main river and accesses the park from a different point to the main gate. It has had a face lift since Robin Pope Safaris took it over, they've done a great job and run a good ship. It just doesn't have that 'wow' factor we look for - it's awkward to get to, which arguably gives it that remote feeling, but then the game driving area is mainly Mfuwe and therefore the busy part of the park. There are more convenient options than this for exploring the main area of the Luangwa.
Luangwa River Camp - The Details
Luangwa River Camp sits nestled under an ancient ebony grove on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the game rich area known as the Luangwa Wafwa. To get to camp it takes close to an hour from Mfuwe Airport, once off the main road there is a wiggly drive through villages and across rivers.
This small and intimate camp with just five en suite chalets, along with its setting and location creates a real feeling of exclusivity and is popular amongst honeymooners for its romantic air. It has had a refreshing and much needed face lift giving the rooms more of an elegant appearance. Both bedroom and bathroom have a large sliding door out onto a private deck. The doors can be kept open or closed, great for first timers and old safari lovers.
The main area of the camp stretches over elevated decking with a double plunge pool (linked by a waterfall between them). It's very open plan with beautiful views straight over the river and onto the park.
The safaris in the park start with access by boat or by vehicle (depending on the time of year and river depth) and gets guests immediately into prime game viewing area without having to go through the main gate. This is a great camp to come too in the rains to do some boating safaris.
