Encounter Mara Camp

Set out in a private reserve on the outskirts of the famed Masai Mara, at Encounter Mara you benefit from brilliant wildlife but without the crowds. While the Great Migration doesn’t stretch this far, the sightings are spectacular, with lion, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and elephant often wandering close to camp. The private nature of the reserve also means guests can enjoy more than the standard game drive activity, with night drives, hot air ballooning, and fly-camping also on offer.

With just 10 tents including two family tents, here you will enjoy an intimate safari experience. Each room is spacious and comfortable, with a large canvas tent separated into a living space, bedroom and ensuite bathroom. There is hot water and flushing loos, so while you’re technically under canvas, the experience isn’t far off a permanent structure offering.

Rooms also have an inviting outside day bed set for guests to enjoy a morning coffee or settle down with a pair of binoculars - or relax into a siesta - in the afternoon. The main area is a cosy hideout of varnished wooden panels and soft furnishings, with an attractive dining area and raised firepit. Food is fresh and delicious, and Encounter even has a pizza oven which isn’t something many tented safari camps can say!

Importantly, Encounter offers a brilliant safari experience for much less than if you were to opt for its permanent sister lodge Naboisho Camp, which is decked out with spa treatments and a swimming pool. In its green season Encounter costs £335 per person per night, and at its most expensive in the high season from mid-June to November, it’s £700pppn.
