Speke’s Camp is situated on the edge of the Maasai Mara Reserve, surrounded by fabulous indigenous trees overhanging the Olare Orok River. Small, intimate and very reasonably priced this is a no frills camp that really delivers well and is fantastic value for money.

Speke's Camp - The Details

Speke’s Camp is one of the more affordable luxury camps within the Maasai Mara, making it the perfect addition to any safari circuit.

For those who are more budget conscious, but still want that luxury experience, it allows access to the Mara that is undoubtedly one of the best areas for wildlife in Africa. Famous for the big cats and the annual Great Migration of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game, the Mara boasts some of the highest density of wildlife seen on the continent.

Speke’s and its seven traditional safari tents with en-suite bathrooms are located alongside the Olare Orok River under the shade of majestic indigenous trees. Spekes’ prime position provides great access to a number of good gaming areas in the Mara such as Musiara swamp, Rhino Ridge, Paradise Plains and the Leopard-rich Talek River, all of which featured in the BBC's Big Cat Diaries.

Game drives are even more special by the guarantee of a private vehicle. Whether you are a large family or a couple, having your own vehicle with your own guide not only allows you to plan your day as you wish, but it also guarantees you an intimate and exclusive experience in the wilderness.

The main area of the camp comprises of a communal 'mess tent' as well as a 'chill-out lounge' which is home to a fully-stocked library and bar. Time in between game drives passes in a flash and before you know it, dinner is served by candlelight

Aside from sundowners, picnics and wildlife spotting whilst on game drives in this fabulous wildlife location, one of the most spectacular experiences at Speke’s is the opportunity for an epic walking adventure across the Maasai plains to Jan’s Camp in the Loita Naimina Enkyio forest. Departing from the Sand River over a 5 day adventure with local Maasai guides, guests walk along ancient trails left by the Maasai tribe into the comfort of Jan’s Camp.

As with any camp in the Mara, the most popular period is between July and October when around twenty-five percent of the Wildebeest Migration enters the Mara. Crossing the border from Tanzania, the herds make their way to the green grasses that the Mara offers. Where there is an abundance of prey, you can be sure a predator is lurking nearby. Renowned for its incredible wildlife sightings and photographic opportunities, the Maasai Mara is arguably the best destination in Africa for wildlife viewing.

This fame however does come at a cost, during the peak season the Mara can get busy. We therefore recommend splitting your time in between the National Reserve and the surrounding conservancies which only have limited visitor numbers.
