Kicheche Valley - The Details

Peacefully tucked away amongst the acacia woodlands, the secluded and intimate Kicheche Valley offers the perfect base to experience an incredible safari that is action-packed and filled with wonderous adventure.

The camp itself is comprised of six luxurious and spacious tents that are set on wooden platforms. Each comes with its own private deck which allows game viewing to happen without leaving the comfort of your room.

Kicheche is the perfect example of how a tented camp should be. Open and airy, you truly feel at one with the wilderness, yet are still encompassed by luxury surroundings.

The main area is homely and inviting and dining occurs under the stars al-fresco or in the main area where guests can swap stories after an exhilarating day on safari.

Located in the Naboisho Conservancy, a normal day will include two game viewing activities. One in the early morning and one in the late afternoon. These activities include game drives, walking safaris, fly camping, night drives and many others that involve the local community. The freedom of having so many activities to choose from and knowing that you are directly giving back to the local communities who manage the land is why spending time in the conservancies is so special in the Maasai Mara.

When choosing a camp in the Mara eco-system, it is vital to understand what type of game viewing experience you are after. The National Reserve itself can become busy and overcrowded during peak season, however this is where you can witness the mighty river crossings of the Mara when the wildebeest herds arrive. The conservancies on the other hand offer a far more intimate and secluded wildlife experience. With a visitor limit per hectare of land, and controlled sightings, any time in the conservancies is certainly not wasted. Because the migration cannot be seen from the conservancies, we would always recommend combining a camp in the National Reserve with a camp in one of these private areas of land.

Contrary to popular belief, not all of the migration enters the Mara's eco-system. About a third of the wildebeest cross the border into Kenya whilst the remaining individuals stay in Tanzania. Due to weather patterns changing, this is of course not set in stone, however the best time to see the herds in the Mara is during very late July and August. Here the concentration is at its highest and during this period you can witness those documentary spectacles as the wildebeest risk their lives against the current of the Mara River and the predators that lurk there.
