Whilst South Africa is not as famous as Zimbabwe or Zambia for its walking safaris, there are still some excellent options that will allow those with the wishing of spending some time walking in the bush to do so. From leisurely strolls in the Greater Kruger to tracking black rhino at Phinda Game Reserve, there are plenty of options to choose from.

The best walking safaris in South Africa

With the exception of a few, almost every safari lodge in South Africa will give the opportunity to enjoy a walking safari. They are normally undertaken in the morning instead of your usual game drive. Seeing the bush from a different perspective is always a thrilling prospect and focusing on the smaller parts of the eco-system make you realise that the unseen wildlife is just as important as the big five.

Tanda Tula in the Timbavati offers an exclusive walking experience when staying at their Field Camp. Set up for a maximum of eight guests, exclusivity and intimacy are the key. Here you will track big game in one of South Africa's most famous areas of the Greater Kruger and experience the thrill of seeing these animals at eye level.

Other camps in the Greater Kruger like Londolozi and Leopard Hills also offer walking safaris, however they are certainly not as intense as the camps that offer an exclusive walking experience.

Phinda Game Reserve also offers guided walking safaris, whether you are staying at Mountain Lodge in the South or Vlei Lodge in the North, the different biomes will give you a great perspective of how different areas can coexist. The extra activity of exclusive Black Rhino Tracking and monitoring sees you go out on foot in search of one of Africa's most beautiful, yet dangerous creatures. With a dedicated guide and tracker, you will walk in the footsteps of these prehistoric animals and study their behaviour before hopefully observing one. The activity is dependent on a private vehicle and guide being available though, so make sure you book in advance.
