Little Mombo: Our View

Little Mombo is just next door to Mombo main camp and together with it’s big sister they are quite simply the best camps in Botswana; and certainly some of the best in the world.  Although the price tag is pretty vast, it is worth every penny.  You are never out of sight from game and in most cases, on the open plains, you will see up to 10 different mammals.  The bird life is also overwhelming.  The camp itself is stunning with panoramic views of the floodplains, but to top things off the guiding and in-house service is unrivalled.  For a group of 6 people, you can take the camp exclusively.

Without question, Little Mombo has some of the best game viewing in the world. It is a magical place and quite frankly, nowhere compares to it. It can only get 5 paws.

Little Mombo: The Detail

Located in the heart of the Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve on the northern tip of Chiefs Island, Little Mombo is approximately one hours flight from the International airport at Maun. The camp is accessed by its own private bush airstrip which is roughly 30 minutes game drive from camp.

Mombo – Botswana’s ‘Place of Plenty’ - looks over a floodplain that literally teems with game.  The main communal area at Little Mombo has a great view over the plain infront of camp. Consisting primarily of a main thatch structure that is home to the lounge, bar and dining table the camp also has a small decking area for meals under the stars. There is also a fire place and swimming pool.

The whole of the camp is raised up onto a wooden deck with wooden walkways between the rooms; buffalo often sleep under the rooms at night. Each of the 3 luxurious tents are identical, set out to stretch across the island - all have good views over the floodplain. Each room is equipped with a decking area and an outside sala (double bed!) to enjoy the scenery in your own privacy. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, made of the highest quality and fit well with the surrounding environment. The rooms are linear in design with the bathroom and two showers at one end. The mid section has a large wardrobe and towards the opposite end is a gigantic bed followed by your very own living area equipped with a mini-bar and selections of snacks.

The Mombo reserve boasts massive concentrations of plains game and an incredible concentration of the predators. Wild dog and cheetah are rarely seen but the dominant female from a wild dog pack has remained and adopted up to 15 Black Backed Jackals and created a pack, with which it hunts and lives with. It even regurgitates its food for the young, in true wild dog style.

According to Mombo guides you are almost guaranteed a lion sighting every drive and if not, then certainly every two drives. The guiding is top notch and Wilderness channel the best and most sought after guides to Mombo. The staff and in house service is well up there with some of the best hospitality in Africa - they excel in the food and beverage department.

Mombo only offers game drives during the daytime. Night drives are not permitted due to the camps location inside the Moremi Game Reserve. Water levels are too low for boating activities.

Many people regard Mombo as the best safari camp in the world, and we agree. The huge number of all the cats and vast concentrations of virtually everything else mean that game drives are always fulfilling and regularly explosive!

Jao is one of Africa’s most famous camps. Built high up into the trees the design of Jao truly takes your breath away; the rooms are absolutely beautiful, with vast beds, lounges and outside double ‘sala’ beds.

We like this camp solely because of the location; the game here is very good. The quality of guiding is also impressive and with a fairly recent, much needed refurb, Chiefs Camp is a great place for safari.
