Lamu Town And ShelaLamu’s prominence as a trading post for the sultanate of Oman and one of the most important locations in East Africa for the slave, ivory and gold trade means that Lamu town itself was the commercial focal point for the region. Today, the town is a hectic example of bustling Swahili life that has to be seen to believe! A great place to explore for a day, but in reality we believe the town has very few good hotels and is one of those places you want to dip into for an afternoon…. then run away!! Shela however is altogether a different and much more inviting little village - we recommend clients stay here.
There are few places in Africa that give such superb examples of Swahili chaos! Lamu and the smaller town of Shela are a maze of winding alley ways, walked by donkeys and their masters who will stop at nothing to go about their daily business!
As much as we don't recommend people stay on Lamu's beaches Shela is a great place to spend a night and visit Lamu town. There is little point staying in Lamu town itself, especially as there are very few good hotels in the town itself. Shela however gives you a much nicer base from which to explore the island. The affluent expat community live here and are the reason for the islands best hotels and restaurants being located here. Lamu and Shela: Accommodation choices
Lamu Town has a scattering of accommodations, which although authentic, are not exactly luxurious! Lamu House is the best of these but we suggest that for clients wishing to stay in the towns on Lamu then Shela is the better option with Peponi's and Shela house being the accommodations we prefer.
Recommended lodges in this area:
Lamu
This has rightly been the place to stay in Lamu for the last decade as it continues to provide great levels of service in beautiful surroundings. The town of Shela is less touristy and crowded than the main town of Lamu and is great to have a wander around of an afternoon.

All of the houses are well placed within the village, but we would probably err towards the beach house as it is right on the beach and features a pool and is the last bit of civilisation for the next 14 miles! They are all, however, perfect for a week as a beach and town stay…but don’t forget to bring your own alcohol if you like an evening sundowner as the village (with the exception of the nearby Peponi) is dry!
