Benguerra: Our View

This lodge is guideline for others to follow; service is exemplary and not intrusive. You can be left completely on your own or encouraged to do as much as possible and either way, it feels like home.

Benguerra is a good lodge but as with nearby Azura, which competes with Beguerra as the top Bazaruto lodge, we cannot give anything in this area 5 palms because of their close proximity to each other and they are in a very busy area. So it gets 4 palms.

Benguerra: The Detail

Located in Bazaruto on Benguerra Island, this is the most luxurious, oldest and well known of all the lodges in Southern Mozambique, Benguerra Lodge. Situated on the protected North West of the island, the lodge holds an exclusive and sophisticated atmosphere quite unfelt in any of the lodges in the region.

With a total of 13 rooms including 2 stunning honeymoon houses split between superb beach front rooms with stunning sea views and those set back in the Millwood and acacia forest that spreads inland, Benguerra is set in the most tranquil of settings. All rooms have sea views and the communal lounge, bar and restaurant areas also look out over beach in front out to sea, broken only by the calm of sailing dhows setting out to sea; sundowners are a must!

Relaxation and rejuvenation are what this lodge excels at; evenings can be spent having private candle lit dinners although the lodges restaurant is just another area with superb views. Cuisine focuses on sea food with a strong Portuguese influence; the food here is sheer class, constantly surprising his guests with refreshing new menus and ideas. No meals are similar and all can be designed to your own specific tastes.

Just off the island lies Aquarium Reef whose very name explains the quality and diversity of the marine life found on the surrounding reefs. Diving here is regarded as some of the best in the world; courses for beginners and even for advanced divers are available. For the more active amongst us there is a broad range of alternative activities- fly fishing, sailing, deep sea fishing to name a few but do not forget to get the chefs to prepare you a castaway lunch to be taken in complete seclusion on one of the exposed sand banks.
