A Visit to Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

When staying in Nairobi, Kenya I paid a visit to the renowned Elephant Orphanage founded and run by the Sheldrick Family. Rehoming wildlife orphans, mainly elephants, is only part of their conservation story, but the work they do is incredible. Their public visits mid-morning allow you to get up close and personal with some of the young elephant orphans currently being looked after. As the keepers feed them with their bottles of milk, you will find out about their daily routines and their unique personalities. An extra day in Nairobi is definitely worth it to visit this incredible conservation organisation.

Amboseli National Park

In the shadow of Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is a photographers paradise. Although based in Tanzania, Africa’s tallest mountain is best seen from Kenya. From fantastic mammal sightings to a wonderful variety of birdlife, a trip to Amboseli is a must for anyone in the country. Tortilis Camp is the standout camp here and with its own private concession, you can get up close and personal with some of the wildlife. The stand out point of Amboseli is the presence of Africa’s largest tuskers. Elephant bulls with tusks that sweep the floor with each step make you realise just how small you are, especially when you’re sat at their feet!

The Masai Mara

During my stay at Rekero in the Mara National Reserve, I was lucky enough to come across many different cat species, but it was one afternoon that stood out from the rest. The short grassy plains of the Mara are not only abundant with big cats like lions, leopards and cheetahs but the smaller, lesser seen cats as well. One afternoon we came across five different servals, including a mum and kitten who successfully hunted. Visiting during November not only gave a more exclusive game drive experience but the lush green foliage gave rise to some very vibrant photographs.

A Hot Air Balloon Safari

Something I would implore everyone who visits the plains of East Africa to partake in is a hot air balloon safari. Allowing a unique perspective across this beautiful landscape, a hot air balloon safari gives you a birds eye view of the land below. From brushing the tops of trees to flying high in the thermals, the experience is topped off with a champagne bush breakfast and I guarantee it is an experience you won’t ever forget.
