Muscat, Oman

Set between the stunning sea of the Arabian Gulf and the towering Hajar Mountains.   Muscat has a character quite different from its neighbouring cities in the UAE
With very few high rise building the city sprawls along the coastline, the most striking thing about Muscat is the contrast of its ancient cultural heritage and its modern style.  The old town boasts, gate houses, old markets, forts and authentic street markets on winding roads in comparison to the large upscale malls, modern highways, restaurants and the huge opera house.

The port is a major part of the city and the beaches run the 25 km of Muscat.  There are a number of excellent hotels and restaurants in the city and it is definitely worth exploring the town for a day or two as well as relaxing on the beach! It is pretty different to the flashy Dubai or Abu Dhabi which ironically are the cities most people tend to flee to. It is a breath of fresh air; saunter down the streets and barter for some beautiful pashminas, admire the intricate Mosque designs, stop for lunch and enjoy some of the best seafood around or even go on a boat tour around the Gulf of Oman and catch a glimpse of a pod of excitable dolphins... As you can tell, whether history, wildlife or general wandering is your thing; Muscat has it all in abundance and is certainly worth a visit.
