Best Places To Stay In The Kruger National Park On Safari

Kruger National Park is considered to be the rough diamond of South African safaris. Although the private reserves help to make up the area called The Greater Kruger, they are an entirely different entity than the National Park. The private reserves offer lodges that are extremely luxurious and are seen as some of the best in the business.

The Kruger is as large s Israel, meaning that no matter how often you visit, there will always be more flora and fauna to discover. The parks landscape varies dramatically over its 20,000 square kilometres, ranging from open plains to thick mopane forests. Its variety makes it the perfect habitat for an abundance of wildlife.

For those who like private and secluded safari experiences then the National Park is not the option for you. The park is open to self-drivers and does at times become crowded at animal sightings, but if you can put up with the crowds, then you will ultimately benefit from the affordable accommodation costs. The lodges in Kruger vary from simple and rustic rondavels and safari style tents to more luxurious bungalows. There is the option for self-catering facilities or to dine in one of the rest camps' restaurants. It is an exceptional place which caters for everyone's budgets.

If privacy, intimacy and high quality food and accommodation are more your thing, then we would recommend staying in the private reserves of the Greater Kruger which includes the Sabi Sands and the Timbavati areas. These reserves have no fences into the National Park so whilst these private reserves do not allow day visitors, the animals can roam freely in-between. Only guests staying at the lodges are allowed onto the properties and no self-driving is allowed for game drives. The lodge's own guides will take you into the heart of the reserve, either by vehicle or on foot, to help to find all creatures, great or small. The result is a far more relaxed, intimate and personal experience at the lodge and at animal sightings.

We have listed a number of our favourite lodge's in the Greater Kruger Area below:

Ngala Tented Lodge

Ngala Tented Camp is one of &Beyond’s Kruger properties, located in the Timbavati Reserve to the West of the Kruger National Park itself. Ngala Tented is the finest of the Ngala properties and comes at a very affordable price compared to the likes of Singita, Royal Malewane and Londolozi. It's no under twleve policy makes it perfect for couples however it is more expensive than the other Ngala properties, but this is no negative - you definitely get what you pay for here.

Singita Lebombo

Located in the Kruger National Park itself, Singita’s Lebombo is the most contemporary of all the South African Singita lodges and one of the  most unique designs of any safari lodge. Recognised as having exceptional levels of service as well as seriously good game viewing, Lebombo is world class and deserves to be placed amongst South Africa’s finest properties.

Tintswalo Safari Lodge

Sandwiched between the Sabi Sands and TImbavati Game Reserves, Tintswalo Safari Lodge is situated in the Manyeleti Game Reserve which also forms part of the Greater Kruger Area where sightings of the 'Big 7' are often completed in a short stay. With six beautifully luxurious rooms, a seperate two-room presidential suite and a seperate Manor House which runs as its own lodge, Tintswalo has something for everyone.

Lion Sands Tinga Lodge

Situated in a private concession within the boundaries of the Kruger National Park, Lion Sands TInga Lodge allows guests to explore unseen parts of the National Park which give access to a beautiful variety of wildlife off of the main tourist roads in one of the most luxurious lodges. Whilst Kruger National Park visitors have restricted road access, staying at Tinga allows exploration into areas that regular Kruger visitors could only dream of.

Royal Malewane

Royal Malewane is located in a private game resereve outside of the Kruger National Park. Regarded as one of Africa’s most luxurious lodges, this place is arguably on another level completely.  The accommodation here would rival any other hotel on the planet and with great game viewing this is one of the best safari hotels for those of us looking to be pampered. A truly sumptuous lodge where nothing is left out.

Singita Sweni

Located alongside Lebombo on the private Singita reserve in the Kruger National Park itself, Sweni is yet another top end Singita product that carries the usual standards to be expected of the Singita brand. Sweni is smaller than Lebombo so offers a slightly more personal experience than its more contemporary brother. A world class lodge and one of the Kruger’s finest properties.

Lion Sands Narina Lodge

Lion Sands Narina Lodge is much like it's sister lodge Tinga. Situated on the banks of the Sabie River, Narina also has breath-taking views but isn't as family friendly. Like Tinga, the concession consists of a five-thousand hectare traverse in between the Sabie and Sand Rivers where Big 5 game viewing is very good.

Ngala Safari Lodge

Ngala Safari Lodge is a slightly more economical option than its sister Ngala Tented and substantially less expensive than its Sabi Sands competitors. With 24 rooms, Ngala Safari Lodge is much larger than its neighbours but the size drives down the price and makes this lodge one of the most economical options in the Kruger and its surrounding reserves. This is certainly still a high-end luxury lodge and a great option for saving some cash.

Ulusaba

Sir Richard Branson’s Ulusaba is one of the world’s most famous safari hotels and certainly a top end option for luxury safari. Ulusaba appeals to many, because it has many different room types, categories and prices offering fantastic value. It perfectly achieves the balance of delivering high-end service in a friendly manner, which keeps guests returning year after year. Definitely a great option for Sabi Sands safari.
