Drakensberg, South Africa

The lesser known gem of Southern Africa, the Drakensberg mountain range in the south west of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a must for any nature and hiking lover.

With high escarpments and spectacular views, the Drakensberg offers a great contrast to the rest of Southern Africa. The mountain range is effectively the border between South Africa and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho (home to the highest pub in the world).

The Drakensberg was the backdrop to a number of famous battles between the English, Boers and Zulus, most notably the Battle of Isandwala where the British army was famously beaten by the Zulus. Combining a few days hiking with a battlefield tour from either Fugitive’s Drift or Three Tree Hills is a great way to make the most of the whole area.

The north and centre offer the most dramatic views and hiking opportunities, in particular Cathedral Peak and Giant’s Castle.

As well at it's absolutely stunning views, a trip to Drakensberg Mountains also offers an abundance of wildlife to goggle at and huge biodiversity. On the rock faces find ancient bushman paintings and generally enjoy basking in it's rich history and beautiful landscapes. A fantastic location for adrenaline seekers and landscape lovers alike.

The Drakensburg are an easy combination with any South African safari itienrart
