Rocktail Bay: Our View

Rocktail Bay is a beautiful rugged beach reserve run by the luxury operator Wilderness Safaris. Located on a wild stretch of coast North of Durban, Rocktail Bay is not your classic beach destination but a truly wild coastline with miles of deserted beach, serious diving and a huge area of wilderness to explore inland.

Rocktail is unique in Africa for the fact it is a wild destination and not a classic Indian Ocean pristine beach. The lodge is not quite worthy of 5 paws, but the location is superb.

Rocktail Bay: The Detail

Rocktail Bay Lodge is situated in the northern reaches of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Accommodation is in 11 tree-house chalets. Each en-suite room has its own private balcony and an outdoor shower surrounded by indigenous forest. The main lodge area has a lounge and meals can be enjoyed on an open wooden deck under a Natal mahogany tree. A boardwalk also winds from the Lodge through a dune forest and down to the beach.

The lodge is situated close to the Indian Ocean. Built within the dune forest, Rocktail Bay Lodge offers a beach holiday. Rocktail Bay Lodge offer boating excursions out to sea to enjoy scuba diving on the coral reefs offshore. Other lodge activities include fly-fishing, snorkelling, swimming and drives to Black Rock, birding walks and drives and visits to the surrounding community in open 4x4 Land Rovers.

Guests are able to accompany the resident turtle expert on research drives at low tide at night helping to monitor the turtles' nesting numbers and behaviour.
