Winter Palace Hotel, Egypt

The Winter Palace is THE place to stay in Luxor, despite the fact that it really has seen considerably better days. It is falling down, the curtains are threadbare and the service is distinctly idiosyncratic... but it is hugely historic, and brilliantly placed for exploring Luxor. We enjoy the waterfront, the gardens and pool too, especially after a hot day...
The Winter Palace is an iconic feature of Egypt’s tourism, dating back to grand colonial days of the great discoveries in the Valley of the Kings on the opposite bank of the Nile. This history abounds, through the grand entrance hall and curving stairs, through the old bar and voluminous restaurants to the wonderful landscaped gardens beyond.

While an oasis within the pell mell of city life beyond, the Winter Palace is very much an old Grande Dame that has seen better days; the paint is peeling on the window frames, and carpets and curtains are threadbare and dusty. Nevertheless, the atmosphere alone makes staying here fun, although do not expect 5 star service or cuisine.

Literally on the main drag overlooking the Nile, the Old Winter Palace has been used by all of the great archeologists and Egyptologists of old. It is perfectly placed to explore this region, and reasonably priced to enjoy its old timer grandeur. Its large, icy swimming pool surrounded by gardens makes a great place to return to after a hot day sightseeing, and there are restaurant options too.
