Bahir Dar is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ethiopia, but even then as the country is relatively off the beaten track, it still does not feel touristy at all! The town is famed for its attractive wide tree lined avenues which bloom with flowers and palm trees.
The rich blue of Lake Tana peeks through the palm trees and is pretty unmissable as Ethiopia’s largest lake. At 68kms wide and 73 km long, Lake Tana is dotted with more than 30 islands, on many of which are found churches and monasteries. There is also the nearby attraction of the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Isat); with its dramatic and beautiful scenes, here is Ethiopia’s mini Victoria Falls, and with virtually no other tourists.
Although with its own certain charm and attractiveness, Bahir Dar is often viewed as a place to base yourself whilst exploring the islands of Lake Tana, and also the nearby falls. Definitely worth a visit, but maybe not a place to stay for a huge amount of time as once you are sick of the lake, Bahir Dar is essentially another busy Ethiopian city!
