Botswana lodges are the crème de la crème of the world of luxury safari. As the country is made up of private concessions unless you go to the extremely busy Chobe National Park or Moremi Game Reserve, the prices naturally inflate. Botswana has followed a model of high quality, low quantity in their approach to tourism and it is exceptional at just this. Botswana is home to some of the most spoiling experiences on the continent. The private reserves mean that a lodge which would cost you $700 per person per night in say, southern Tanzania, would cost you $1,300 per person per night in the watery and beautiful Okavango Delta… To get fantastic wildlife viewing and a huge diversity in activities, all in the privacy of your own slice of wilderness, you have to pay a premium!
Best value quality safari lodges in Botswana
Prices have inflated a lot in Botswana in recent years, and they just seem to be going up and up. A lodge like Pom Pom, which admittedly is in an exceptional game viewing area, is now $1,150 per person per night. Aside from the exceptional guiding and wildlife, the actual accommodation is fairly rustic. A fantastic option for some people, though we wonder whether Botswana isn’t going a bit over the top in prices across the board...
A fantastic new property has opened in the Kwara concession; Splash Camp which is a part of the Kwando range. It is very nicely presented and offers a bit more luxury for your money in an exceptional wildlife area but still comes in at $1,416 per person per night.
In order to slash the price of being in these private wildernesses though, we would recommend travelling off season in either May or November, to get still exceptional wildlife, but for a lot less. For example, Pom Pom over these months decreases to $826 per person per night, and Splash reduces to $1,040.
The best barefoot luxury safari lodges in Botswana
Barefoot-luxury safari lodges are a pretty special experience. Little Vumbura in particular is an office favourite. Set on a little island surrounded by water and in one of the most enviable parts of the Delta, Little Vumbura is a seriously special experience. The style is understated, yet authentically luxurious and we absolutely love it. It is not cheap though! Even without all the added luxuries like private pools and a more glitzy design, Little Vumbura is priced at $2,830 per person per night.
Going a little more intrepid, but no less luxurious is Duba Explorers. This is a tented camp, and really does capture the spirit of exploration in the wilderness, certainly without compromising on luxury. Duba Explorers is for those who crave authentic experiences, but expect a certain standard of opulence on their adventure. It is not a cheap camping experience at $1,900 per person per night.
The most luxurious safari lodges in Botswana
The most luxurious safari camp in Africa, and probably one of the best hospitality experiences in the world comes in Mombo Camp located on Chief’s Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Private pool galore, the world’s most impressive wildlife viewing opportunities, golden bathtubs, huge rooms and excellent food; it doesn’t get much better than this. As it is one of Africa’s flagship safari lodges… There is again, a price tag to match! In recent years, prices have soared and now in peak season, for one night the per person price is $3,800 USD… If you want the life of luxury, have a good Botswana budget, but can’t justify that per night amount, you could look at the still exceptionally spoiling Vumbura Plains, Duba Plains or Zarafa which are all priced at $3,000 per person per night.

Nambwa Tented Lodge offers an Okavango Delta experience for a third of the price. It’s a special camp, where herds of elephants are often found migrating underneath the elevated walkways - which have been specially adapted to allow just this to happen. It’s luxurious, characterful, and a real steal for such an incredible wildlife and camp experience.

Namib Outpost - Sossusvlei
Our View
Namib Outpost is a beautiful lodge tucked into the granite outcrops that is synonymous with the Sesriem/Sossusvlei region. The camp is very good value for money and provides a beautiful spot in which to base yourself to explore Sossusvlei and its surrounds. Being small and intimate, there is a real lodge feel here and with little extras such as the sundowner deck and an extra bed to sleep under the stars, it rivals any camp in the area.

Namiri Plains - Serengeti, Central
5 stars (or 10 stars if I could!). It was wonderful!! We saw lots of cheetahs and even a mom with three small cubs playing with each other very close in additions to 3-week old lion cubs hiding in the bush very close (I think our guide actually went off road to give us better view many times. I hope he did not get in trouble for that...). On top of that, during all those sightings, we were the only car! So it was really secluded which exactly we came there for. Even though the camp was full, they put only two couples in one car so even though we had to share the car with another couple, it was not bad at all. I liked this camp best. All of the staffs who we interacted with were very nice and professional. Our guide was really good. Attention to details were great as well (e.g., a hot water bottle for a cold morning drive etc.,). A dance performance that staffs gave on one of our dinners was really great. The food was good, the tent was simple but comfortable. The safari cars looked new and all of them were very comfortable. Overall, I felt the entire staff/manager were very well trained and really enjoy what they do, which resulted in great services and memorable stay. If we were to come back to Tanzania, we will most likely use Asilia camps for all of our stays next time. - J. Takahishi

Ndutu - Serengeti, South
Ndutu lodge has everything you need without being over the top. The lodge is in one of the more secluded areas just outside the Serengeti, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We like Ndutu – it is the only permanent camp in the region (apart from Kusini) and gets the migration from December through to March. The atmosphere in camp is unpretentious and relaxed, yet frightfully efficient….however, the camp doesn't have its own vehicles and so it's all "drive in" safaris. This makes it very popular with the bigger companies in Arusha and it gets booked up very far in advance.

Ngaga Camp - Ngaga Camp
Our View
Ngaga Camp offers a magical base to explore the Congo Basin from. Situated just outside of Odzala in the Ndzhi Concession, the camp describes itself as ‘gorilla central’ – and that it is. It’s mad about gorillas, and they are the main focus in this research hub. Perched in the treetops, Ngaga effortlessly blends in with its wild surroundings but offers a decent level of luxury with its brilliant lounge, communal dining area, bar, unique river deck and spacious ensuite facilities. It’s one of the most special camps in Africa.

Ngala Safari Lodge - Kruger
Our View
Ngala Safari Lodge is a slightly more economical option than its sister Ngala Tented and substantially less expensive than its Sabi Sands competitors. With 24 rooms, Ngala Safari Lodge is much larger than its neighbours but the size drives down the price and makes this lodge one of the most economical options in the Kruger and its surrounding reserves. This is certainly still a high-end luxury lodge and a great option for saving some cash.

Ngala Tented Camp - Kruger
Our View
Ngala Tented Camp is one of &Beyond’s Kruger properties, located in the Timbavati Reserve to the West of the Kruger National Park itself. Ngala Tented is the finest of the Ngala properties and comes at a very affordable price compared to the likes of Singita, Royal Malewane and Londolozi. It's no under twleve policy makes it perfect for couples however it is more expensive than the other Ngala properties, but this is no negative - you definitely get what you pay for here.

Ngoma Safari Lodge - Chobe
Our View
Ngoma Safari Lodge is pricey for Chobe National Park lodges given it’s not in a private concession, but don’t knock it just because of that: there are many things which make this luxurious opening an attractive option. Set in the quieter part of the park - in the Chobe Forest Reserve - it benefits from the incredible wildlife of the national park but without sharing sightings with loads of other tourists. It also has the added creature comforts of private plunge pools - but for half the price you would pay in the private concessions of the Okavango Delta.

Ngong House - Nairobi
Our View
Each of the rooms at Ngong House have been beautifully constructed and looked after over the years the house has been open. As with the other hotels in the area, this is a great place to relax for a couple of nights while exploring the sights in and around Nairobi. Great rooms and fantastic service, it does however lack from having no pool.Our Rating:
